is this a decent entry level digital recording for a home player. I have various guitars and amps a digital piano with midi out. I will probably only lay down one track at a time.

I wish i could hook it directly to my mac but i guess i have to use SD cards for that.

What program could i use once they files created on the zoom are on my mac. I have garage band but would i need something better?...protools, etc.

thanks,
ww

Its decent for a home player, especially if you are doing only one track at a time. For recording any type of band in a live situation (acoustic drums and bass/guitars simultaneously) you will need a mixer or multi-input preamp for all the inputs you will need to accomplish that.
Instead of spending money on a harddisk recorder like the mrs-8, why not get a good preamp with multi inputs that allows you to record to your mac? You get away without a lot of hardware by keeping it in the digital realm. I don't have experience in it, but consider doing it someday before I end up spending tons of money on outboard gear (compressor, eq, effects)

Hey WW!

I own the MRS-8. Its great actualy especialy for us "one track at a time" folks.

Its very easy to operate and has tons of great features.

It should work fine with garage band, I use mine with a PC.
Zoom has a .wav converter for PC and Mac.
What you do is put the SD card into a card reader and then select the card with the Zoom software and then convert each file to a .wav or AIFF.

Then you can manipulate it in software. I am not not sure of too many Mac audio editors except Bias makes a LE version of Peak I think its called.
Its like $100.

I wish I could aford a new PowerBook 12inch........ :( That would be nice.

And goodbyebluesky, He would be keeping it in the digital relm there is no analog/digital conversion when you do the file convert.
So therefor he wouldnt need more than the MRS-8 and Card reader and his Mac to get it to the Mac....... So no need for a compressor Ect....
Plus recording on a PC or Mac can be its on can of worms, many issues to be delt with. In my opinion its not worth the hassle.
And its not a Hard disk recorder it records to SD cards. which make it convenient to colaborate with friends. Just grab the card and go.
And he wouldnt realy spend that much on the MRS-8, its only $300!!

But anyway I recomend the MRS-8. Hell I have a yahoo group for MRS-8 users.
Just go to http://groups.yahoo.com and search Mrs-8 or MRS-8 plus you will find it.

Later
