Zoom MRS 1608 Help

I need help learning how to use a Zoom MRS 1608 recorder. Is there anyone with experience that lives in Arizona? I live in Tucson, but will drive to you.

Has anyone ever experienced noise while using this machine? I hear a weird almost like thumping but sounds like electrical interference in my recordings.
