Zoom H4N uneven mic levels?

Hi,

I've just bought a Zoom H4N and am pretty happy with it so far. However, something I've noticed when in stereo recording mode is that the right mic level seems to be a tiny bit higher than the left one, at least if I just hold the unit and watch the levels move with background noise.

I was wondering if this is normal or if I may have a faulty unit?

Thanks for any advice.

I don't know that particular unit well, but are there independent gain controls for left and right?
I know they're tied together on my Tascam DR-40, but it's worth checking.

Hope that helps.
Hi, thanks for the reply. I'm a newbie to recording and still pretty clueless with regards to how this little box works (only got it yesterday). However, after looking at a few vids on Youtube I've come to the conclusion that there probably isn't any problem. In fact, the slight difference in levels seems to have just been the angle the unit was held at (duh). I'm going to start reading the manual now anyway. Cheers.

Hey, that's cool.
The mics are X/Y right?

That'll be very sensitive to stereo image, especially up close.

If you want to test to be sure, set the unit up so it's pointing straight at you, but walk 10 feet away and clap your hands a few times.
If there's still an imbalance in levels then there might be something up.

Thanks for the replying to let us know. :)
