Zoom H4 as a mic pre for acoustic/folk music?

Hello there,

I'm new to the forums here, but I think y'all may be able to help me with a predicament. I'm a college student with a dozen or so songs in the holster looking to record my first album at home. A couple years back I bought a Zoom H4 because I was convinced it was pretty much the Swiss Army knife of home recording, and I couldn't afford a whole workstation.

Anyway, this thing's got some built-in pres, and my question is whether or not you guys would advise me to stick with this and utilize funds on the mics, or invest in a better pre-amp. The type of music I'm recording is folksy, poppy, sometimes ethereal; always heavily driven by acoustic guitar. Fleet Foxes meets the Shins, if you will (but not on that level, of course). Any advice is appreciated, thank you.

Somebody that I record with just used that for some recordings and they turned out good. For your first mix and album I don't think you would notice a difference between that Zoom and something else. So my personal opinion is that it would be good enough.
