I was really looking at the model but when I got home I was thinking about it. It was a Zoom 4 Track Recorder, but you could only record 2 tracks at once. What is up with that? It was a new digital thing with the memory cards. Have I been out of the loops so long. Im using an old 4 Track tape recorder and I can use all 4 tracks at once. How is this better? Someone please explain this tech.

Well you gotta understand that those are the cheapest recorders on the market. It has to process the tracks and amplify the signals with the limited digital signal processing power it has onboard. The throughput on a memory card can't be very fast. Think, if you are recording and monitoring up to four signals simultaneouly it can get kind of crowded getting on and off that little card of tightly packed ones and zeros.

Skip any recorder with a memory card or data compression. You probably have more sonic potential on your cassette 4 track.

what are you talking about the zoom mrs-4 is awesome.. buy mine for only 100 bucks and ill throw in a 128mb card..... no but seriously this machine sucks... preamps suck, noise floor is high, compression sucks, low headroom...... dont waste ur money like i did, but i have a tascam 788 comeing tomorow YAY!

jake-owa nailed it.

I use a Fostex VF160CDR DAW to Track. It easily handles 8 Tracks of Recording at once and is easily expandable to 16 Tracks at once.

Yes, the AX-Man is right:

Mo tracks = mo results.

If you have to bounce tracks for some special effect or idea you are trying, that's fine. However, when you bounce tracks, like bass to drums, you can no longer tweak "only" bass. Whatever tweaks you put on the two tracks affects them both.

I seldom use more than 8 tracks; however, I have more available on the 2816 if needed. Depends on your needs. I don't mic-up large groups. So, I'm only recording a couple of tracks at a time or just over-dubbing.

If you want quality sound, you do have to spend a few pezzutos.
