Hey - trying out some totally different drum sounds...strung together a simple arrangement as a test and just kept adding stuff and came up with this strange...uh...thing. There are bits with my son playing left for dead on xbox mixed in for good measure.

Anyway, mostly interested in the drums as I've only tracked and mixed drum machines before and I'm finding this much more complicated. I wanted a big, roomy sound, but I'm probably overdoing it?

Thanks,
Pete

Yeah I'd say the drums are a little too roomy, but not too much for the song. Maybe dial the reverb back just a hair. Cool song.

So those are real drums ?Who did them? They sound pretty good.

Thanks Greg. God no - not real I'm afraid - I would've been much more proud had I tracked them myself. I have new found respect for all of you dealing with multi track drums. Just mixing them is a pain - but so many more possibilities than a drum machine.

This is from a library of samples that I purchased to be compatible with the older roland portastudio I picked up recently. Comes with separate kick & snare, plus linked stereo toms, linked stereo overheads and linked stereo room mics. Whew. I wanted to try them out and see if it was worth using them on other songs. I probably would turn down the room mics on a more normal sort of tune.

Sorry, I know this is cheating, but not more so than using a drum machine I guess?

Cheating shmeating. If it sounds good, it is good. It's only cheating when you claim you tracked real drums when they aren't. Stick with these samples. What you got here sounded good.

Yeah they sound good. Try dialing down the room a bit and see how it sounds. I think in this song they sound okay though. Cool tune - very grungy.

Brilliant!

I really dig your tunes and, no offence, I think the drums or the machine you used to use really let you down...Im glad you've moved away from it because your stuff is so original sounding to me it deserved better driving it along...

anyhoo

yeah they did sound too roomy at the beginning but once your into the meat and two veg they seem to sit a better...love the bass..really rocking

im giving you 4 dancing trousers for the new drums...but wait for it, thats out of 4! maximum trousers!! :laughings:

KEEP THOSE DRUMS! They are so much better than what you've been using. They are a bit roomy though, but that should be an easy fix. Do you plan on adding vocals, or were you just jamming around?

I liked the drums. Yep they're verby, but I thought it worked well in the mix. Maybe dry up the snare just a weeee bit. But not much.

I assume this is just playing around otherwise. The "dueling guitars" are trampling on each other for attention.

Liked the distorted bass.

Very reassuring. Thanks again Greg.

Great, thanks ido...I wanted to be sure I was at least in the ballpark and it sounds like I am. Never having this kind of stereo spread available to me before I really pushed it here with the overheads and the room mics. I can always dial it back in the future.

One of the cooler sounding tracks I've heard here. I loved it. Perfect title too. I wish I knew how to get fake drums to sound like that.

Maximum trousers...sweet :).

I am offended though...you guys could've told me my old drum tracks sucked! Sometimes people would actually single out the drum machine as a high point...hmm what does that say about all the other stuff?

Seriously, I do appreciate the encouragement.

Ok, it seems pretty unanimous. Thanks for listening squibble and for affirming what I hoped to hear. There are tons of zombie vocals at the end...a virtual choir of undead. No lyrcis though...this started out as just a test and then I took it a little too seriously. I will keep working with these drum sounds in the near future at least. Should be interesting...stay tuned.

Thank you for listening and for your observations.

I'd say the guitars are engaged in more of a drunken brawl than an actual duel :), but you're right of course. They're kind of ridiculous.

This started as just a test of combining something with these new drums. When I got to the guitars I was just having fun, but eventually I started to obsess and take it too seriously - adding tons of stuff. I don't mind the cacaphony for the last half, but the first section should be more focused. Turns out 2 sub-par leads played simultaneously don't add up to more than the sum of the parts :o...who knew?

That is really cool of you to say GZ. You are too kind. I am totally new to anything beyond simple drum machines, but the whole sample thing seems to be the way to go (unless I had real drums, and, uh, could play real drums). Hopefully this is just the start of bigger and better productions to come. The consensus is clearly that this is an improvement. Thanks so much.

Yeah, heatmiser. The most impressive part I'm hearing is the cymbals and hats. They mesh in with the rest of the kit perfectly.

Recently, a user posted a song which rocked, and the drums wanted to rock, but each drum sounded isolated to itself, which seemed to suck the power right out of the song. This is the complete opposite. Lots of power, lots of grit, and the drum sounds work together to form a cohesive kit.

Love it!

Awesome...thanks PI. I am happy to have some drummers chime in.

You know what is odd? I just realized that no reverb was added to the drums at all. All that sense of space is from the overhead and the room mic tracks. I think it is a more natural sounding reverb than adding digital verb post-tracking (which is what I always did with drum machines). Thanks again for checking in...:)

heh drums remind me of the old days practising in a school hall..those chilly evenings brrr. They sound good, you certainly got big and roomy, the only nit I have is that fill that repeats several times from 0.55 reduces the sense of realism. Great growly bass sound and nice delays too. Fun tune

Cool. Was there gunfire and zombies at the school too?...hardcore.

You are correct on the repetition. Not so much effort on the arrangement this first time out, but future efforts will involve a lot more variation I hope. Thanks!

Hmm,

Can't help thinking that if you are going to have Zombie screams in the background and describe your music as psychadelic rock, then you can get away with roomy drums.

If the whole thing sounds like it is being played in a coffin/dungeon/cavern/tomb then that's a good thing, isn't it?

Cool song, I enjoyed it. Can't say fairer than that!
