SM57, it will do anything. I wouldn't want to stick my U47 up against the head of a kick drum or close up on a loud rectifier cabinet. However, the 57 will do that, and track a soft jazz singer, and it will do all these jobs well.

I wouldn't want to try making a living recording soft jazz singers with an SM57. :(

Shure SM-7. Good for vox, cabs, toms and snare. OK for brass, What's not to like?-Richie

If only used for recording, then the U67 with Stephen Paul mod.
(that could change when his new mikes come out!)

For live use AND recording use, the Beyer M88TG (or M88).
Assuming that the live sound engineer knew how to roll-off
the bass on it though. (BIG proximity effect)

Never have tried a 441, some say they sound somewhat similar.

No, if it was your living, you'd want more specialized equipment.
But in a pinch, it works.

Some of the jazz singers I know, I'd consider myself lucky to escape with only a pinch if I tried to use a 57 on them...:D

Now we're starting to get somewhere with this thread, I know I wouldn't be as worried about using an SM57 or MD421 outdoors and etc as I would with some of the mic's listed in this thread so far.

SM-58. For those important studio moments when you can't find your hammer...
