I have a set of Wharfedale Diamond 8.2 monitors. One of the tweeters is blown. I'm working on a replacement, but I'm ready to upgrade either way... will just keep the Wharfs for spare / contrast pair.

I wanted to hear some general opinions about what monitors are working out best for each. My friend has a set of Yamaha HS series w/ sub that I really like and am considering buying.

I have another friend (more studio experience) who swears that I have to go with Genelecs. He said nothing sounds more accurate than these that he's heard. Second opinions from others on the Genelec tell me that they are extremely flat.

Third, I've also heard that the JBL series were good, specifically the ones with the mic for balancing. I'm also heavily considering these but am afraid that most of the cost accounts for the mic system in otherwise average monitors.

I'd like to keep it under $2000 and am pretty set on accompanying them with a sub. I really liked the Yamaha's because they can sound big, full and round. Accuracy is valued but, to dry and flat tends o be a turn off for me.

What have your experiences with monitors left you with? thanks!

I've been partial to the Mackie 824 the last few years. Nice low end w/o the need for a sub...and my mixes have been translating well. They're probably the lowest $$$ one can go if looking for more serious studio monitors.

ADAM makes some nice stuff, wouldn't mind upgrading to a pair one day...though their real good stuff is pricey, but with $2k, you are close to the bottom of their top end stuff...if you get my meaning.

Some of the Genelecs can come off a bit strident in the upper end...though I guess it depends on what you like. A lot of folks use them.

Then there is Focal (very intersting, not cheap)...Dynaudio (some classic studio monitors)...and many more...

Flat is good. You don't want flattering monitors, you want accurate monitors.

I use the Yamaha HS50's as a second set of monitors next to my Mackie HR824's (mkI). I think the HS50 is an excellent monitor. I wouldn't want the HS50's as my only set, as they are a bit small. However, with a sub, maybe. Although, I'm not a fan of using subs. If you're looking at the HS80's, those are a fine choice.

HS80 FOR ME.
Hands down, for price and accuracy. What I mix on these ,sound transfers over to any sound source . I dont use a sub. You can ,but You can really hear what your low will end up. It is about knowing your monitors and room also. They don't sound the best(I had to lower the hp because they are bright) However when I did that.It was sweet.and my ears dont get tired.
So there are alot of reasons I went with them.
TRUST ME.
I dont see a big diffrence in any monitor that makes me want to spend another 1000-2000 over the hs80. I repeat (there is not a diffrence in spending that much more for monitors over the hs80.)
You have to find a monitor that BLOWS IT OUT THE WATER.That may be hard to do.
I do plan on getting another set of diffrent monitors to a-b with. or make beats with like some upper end macks or something. And do my final mix with the Hs 80 or grab a sub. BUT I am not in a rush.
Again accuracy!!!

IM sure you know there yams. There is some in 90% in studios all over. Even the net.Even the ns-10s.OR hs80 or 50.Look up pics of studios and that helped me decide.

Yamaha HS50s can be found in most all major studios. Even if there used as a third reference monitor.

Really? HS50's in most major studios? Don't think so. Most of them still have a pair of NS10's that have been on the console for years. They're not replacing their NS10's with HS50's. At least not from what I've been seeing.
