I know the "technical" advantages of better fret access and better sustain (compared to bolt ons or set necks) ... but my big Q. is:

How does it "translate" this to the final product - the sound coming from your amp?

if you were playing blindfolded, would you be able to tell that its a neck-thru?

any other thoughts?

thx

Most would never notice. And with respect to better access and playability, I doubt it too. To me it is much more a matter of the guitar design, although I recognize often times neck-thru's are better designed as they tend to be higher priced guitars. But my Ibanez S-shape Prestige is bolt-on and it's got incredible playability, access and sustain.

What I do think you might perceive is a slighty better sustain as you mentioned. But IMHO, it'd get more affected by the wood type, body design and pickups than whether the neck is bolted on or not.

Thru neck guitars definately feel different. I think you could notice the feel more playing blindfolded than you would thru the actual sound thru an amp. It's one of those hard to explain things for me, but the best I can explain it is that you can feel the whole guitar moving together evenly. I have always liked Gibson Firebirds. They definately have a feel and a sound that is different from all the other guitars out there. I can't give you alot of technical data, it's just a feel thing for me. It's easiest to understand when you actually have one in your hands and play it.

I have a Carvin DC135 which is neck through. You can hear it by clicking on the link in my signature line in any song except My World.

I bet you can hear the difference of neck-thru's on a bass guitar more, than on guitar. I definietly like the feel of most neck-thrus better, there are cons though (i.e. break a headstock, and your buying a whole new guitar instead of just a new neck, and you can't reset the neck either if need be as the guitar ages).

ok but broken headstocks can be fixed and necks only have to be reset because ther is a neck joint.

i have a full scale chiquita (actually an '82 hondo) which is neck-thru and it certainly has a different feel to it then the rest of my guitars. this may sound stupid but it feels more "solid" (duh).

i have never really been able to hear an audible difference between a high quality bolt on and a neck through guitar. i just prefer neck through guitars because of extra comfort playing on the upper frets and because there is absolutely no room for your neck joint to wiggle around or get lose or pop. i also like the feel of a painted neck VS a natural one.

i owned a couple of ibanez USA customs and whenever i would really drop the trem i would always hear the neck joints crack and pop. unnerving
