Learning, always learning
I recently bought a new laptop (Gateway FX series) and it has the Firewire port on this model. I was thinking of picking up a FW-1082 interface/controller to run into Reaper on the laptop. It appears to be a well regarded piece of gear and I just wanted to hear some feedback from some of the folks on here who have used the FW-1082.;)

Maybe I'm too late to offer help but I have the FW-1884 which, AFAIK, is the next one up. I like it alot. I've read about both and the FW-1884 has better/different converters but I think the mic pres are the same.

Not too late man. I don't need the size and capability of the 1884, that and the price difference is pretty substantial. I'm just looking for the 1082 to pair with my laptop for "on-location" type of scenarios.

Gotta put this off until after the wedding though.:p

i have a 1082 but actually have yet to use it >< (woohoo vista 64bit, working on figuring that out)

so, sadly i can't give any helpful advice about the use and performance, but it's a solid feeling machine for the price.

i've heard that the fw1082 requires a 6 pin firewire port to function properly, would the laptop have one for sure? or would it have the smaller 4 pin firewire?
that's something you might wanna check on just to be safe.

Well, I've got Windows 7 (64 bit) and a 4 pin firewire...

I thought the 1082 was supposed to work with both types of firewire connections. Is it a case it will work with 4 pin, but with limited functionality? I've got linux on the laptop as well, but have no idea of how it will work with the 1082.

Maybe I'll just pick up one second-hand after I get back from the honeymoon in May and put it through it's paces. I wouldn't have a need for it if it doesn't work with the laptop that well as I've got a Tascam M-2516 mixer running into my main computer and I don't plan on changing that, unless a M520 console comes along.:D
