It's always important to grab people's attention with the headline if you want people to listen to your stuff.

:D

Anyway, I just got done recording a real nice bunch of guys. They remind me a lot of myself about 10 years ago, and they were just a joy to work and hang with for the last week.

I got their permission to include this song amongst my examples. Have a listen and enjoy. I think it's a fun one:

Third song down: Blue Baby Gone.

Tell me what you think of the recording/mixing. I really think I'm turning some corners lately.

Thanks!

Finally I get to be first !! Damm time zones :)

Well I'm typing while I listen. Good mix.. I can clearly hear everything even though it's quite busy. Very live feel.. certainly captures the energy of the music. I love the persussion at the end... there's a second or so of voices that snuck through after the music stops though. The only thing I might add is when the organ swells (in volume) it perhaps seems a little out of place ? The rest of the soundscape sounds very live .... maybe the sound of the organ is too forward ? But that's a pritty minor point.

Well done

this sounds really nice...

kind of raw garage type country rock...i can relate to that.

it definately sounds like it was done "somewhere" with this sound intentional....rather than just sounding like a basement recording...that's what i always go for in my stuff and it just never happens...

what all gear did you use for the recording...any tips you want to give out?

i really like this...great work man hope they paid you decently.

Hotdamn, mojo workin'! Sounds great, stellar mix...you cooked up a nice stew here, this simmers just like it should.

Very good recording, it all seems clear and well balanced, maybe the harmonica might of worked witha bit more presence but thats just an opinion and its works as it is.
Personally I didn't much like the song or the vocals but thats no reflection on the recording

sounds good for the most part.. It has a very raw drum sound.. I'm not crazy about the sound of the drum set, but I think it was probably recorded well.. The vocals may have been a hair too crisp, but I can't find too much to complain about on this, and I was really trying... :) I don't like the song at all..

I noticed it was recorded in One take so that would explain the minimal production.....just sounds like a little blues/shuffle jam....not a hit by any means but a decent recording...musically it doesnt have a lot to offer...I just dont like the song....I realize this isnt your tune so there is nothing you can about that. I guess for the most part your job was done pretty well....strong clean tracks on a one take run.

I can't believe no one likes this one. :D

Oh well. Most of their stuff was pretty raw, heavy, in-your-face kind of stuff, so it was a welcome break when they pulled this one out. In contrast, it sounds kinda' fun, simple and relatively headache-free. Some of you would probably like their other stuff. Very different from this example, albeit a little heavy for my taste.

Dres, Wes, Mkg, Matt: Thanks for the comments. No big production secrets on this one. They wanted a live feel, so we just recorded it that way. In my basement, but we didn't worry a lot about mic bleed. Just played around with the 'verbs after the fact untill I got a sense of spaciousness we were happy with.

What about me and sabbath? :D

I take it that you posted this for a few pats on the back and some atta boys?

Thats cool.

It's very Primus in a way :)

The only thing I don't like is the vocals.. They don't go well with the music.. Everything else is just perfect. Cool sound.

one star? who did that? i personally think this sounds great. a live recording is pretty difficult to do and it sounded fantastic to me. good space in the recording and really well mixed on the instruments.

only sore point for me was the singer i think. something about his voice just isn't doing it for this song imo.

My mistake. The first couple paragraphs were actually directed at you guys, but I figured you knew that. :D KRAMER, I do think you and SABBATH would like some of their other stuff, though. Even though you thought this one sucked. ;) KRAMER. :D lol. Thanks for the comments. KRAMER. And SAB.

How's that?

LMAO!Thats a little overboard man.:D

It was sounding very professional on my end, but the vocal gave it away.

Funk on!

Alright, so the majority of the opinions seem to be not favorable to the vocals.

Does anyone think I could / could have done anything to coax a better vocal sound out of this one (autotune, better mic selection, more/less reverb, eq, etc), or do you think it's purely a performance issue and out of the producer's hands?

Be honest (I'm always trying to get better) !

:D Thanks!

I think the vocal here is strictly a performance issue, not much you can do about that. The mix is cool. (actually, hot, to keep the simmerin' stew metaphor intact) :D

Hey Chess,
Interesting. I didnt mind the drums as much as some of the other guys did. Definitely has a live feel to it. Im not too crazy about the song, but you made the best of it. I still listen to "Dream girl". That was a great re-mix. Nice work man:)

I think its a combo of the mic/pre/converter selection in this case.

Throw a u87 on that singer through a nice pre and it would be magic.

Fun song. I don't think anybody commented on the organ in the chours. I thought that was a nice part.

Fun guitar part too.

I wasn't crazy about the singer either.

Cool!

Very Three Dog Night-like.

I will concurr with others who say the vocal does not do much for me, other than that, I like, especially the organ.
