You folks ever get tired of keeping this up?

I mean ...

Some of us have been at this, including the internet intro into the matter, for a LONG time.

We all know that there's a large new wave breaking who doesn't know shit about nothing ... even though THEY think they do, hitting at the shore asking what folks who do know think about their latest ...

Sigh ... it's sort of Sisyphus ...

I think my rant is reflective of my time availability ... but as I view threads here, it seems that there's a lot of people going:

"What do you think?"

... with not enough sharing ... meaning ...

If you're going to post, take time to go beyond, "Lookie at me, how'd I do?" and delve into what you did to achieve what you got, and what it is you specifically want to make a point of.

For even though I've a human desire to help, I get so busy, I've not time to comment unless the right questions are posed.

In the meanwhile, I've got to go ... there's a whole new wave hitting the shore, and I'm still trying to create my own music ...

Sigh ... I need clones of myself, CLONES I SAY, dammit ...

:D

Folks that can keep up w/ all of it have a special section of heaven reserved just for them ...

I've posed the same question - made the same point myself in the last couple of months.
These tidal surges however, are ever new one that don't return to leave grains of sand to build the beach - these ones just erode!

I fear we may just be getting older and worn, Ray. Still, I do have a desire to contribute, because there was a community conversation that I partook in and was rewarded from.

There is, though, an awful lot of hit and run w/ new contributors. They're here, they want, they leave.

It must be that the world is becoming a Facebook/Myspace sort of community ...

Kind of: The community should be all about what I'M doing ... what do I need to contribute to community?

I just post "What's on MY mind" ... and that's all need be done.

There is indeed a lot of "check out my tunes" while those same people never check out anyone else's. Fuck em. I don't care about your bands myspace page or your phat beats, yo. I know who the regulars are in here. Regular, as in, REGULAR CONTRIBUTOR. Look at all the threads with 0, or only 1 or 2 replies. It's retarded how selfish this place has become.

I won't go into a thread if I don't recognize the username. I keep seeing that this is the 3rd or 4th post ( and in one case, the 1st) of that person, I won't reply. Or if I do, it's in a bitchy, PMS sort of way. Too much self indulgence and not enough character for me to bother.

And these sorts wonder why their post goes away and no responses (except when they get an alter ego with the same post count to come in and stroke their ego for them).

While redundant as it may seem to answer the same questions over and over again, I believe that newcomers to a forum (or any practice, really) actually need the positive reinforcement/punishment in order to motivate and stimulate that person into continuing to learn and delve into the field himself-and then become a regular. It can even take just one response of "hey that's good/bad" for a person to be interested in becoming more involved. It's more rather the empty topics and responses of value ("this sucks, man!") for a person to be turned away from the boards and that leaves you with a double threat: you either open the boards up to countless amounts of newbie question mentalities or you mold a new "regular" into the boards that is just pompous.

While forums are by no means a new thing to me (check out TabIt.net, and say hello! :) ), I've had this very discussion on the other board that I frequent and there's also this problem of redundancy-mostly on the topic of composition.

We are making strides to help out the newbie with the newbie forum. That's not the complaint.

The complaint if you read the OP again, are these self indulgent neophites who post here just to have their ego stroked. They have only posted their song in the clinic to hear how good they are, and have contributed NOTHING else to the board.

+1 That and the dorks that ask stupid questions over and over like "how do I plug in a microphone?" or "what does a preamp do?" Those people should be confined to the yet to be created "Google forum" for not less than 7 years.

This is hilarious. And speaking as someone who is pretty new, I think alot of it is some of an intimidation factor. I mean, I've seen alot of people on here who say they've been lurking in the shadows and just now had something to contribute. I can respect that.
However, there is alot of it as mentioned before that makes newer people to the forum like me feel pretty disgraced (makes me look bad:o).
When I try to help a newb out I always attempt to encourage an active involvement with the site, but I'd say 90% of the time this falls on deaf ears.
And then, to go along with the one hitter quitters in the mp3 clinic, you get the people that search up some obscure post from 2002 just to troll and post some general response that basically sums up the aforementioned.
I dont know, thought I'd share my perspective.
As for me, I just sucked it up knowing I'd make mistakes and posted. Always being courteous of course.

All regular contributors were probably lurkers at one point or another, until felt there was something to add and become part of the conversation.

Everyone is a newbie as some point or another. What gets tiring is the overwhelming amount of folks (like Greg L mentioned above) that throw stuff up on the board for reply, but never offer back.

I THOROUGHLY enjoy listening to new music, and to a large degree I don't mind giving even those folk's tune a spin ... but it the commenting that's the rough thing to keep up with.

One thing I loathe is when someone drops in, posts a song to which a very nice reply/comment is pointedly crafted, and you never see them again.

I can't think of more of an insulting waste of someone's time. So although I somewhat agree with Dan Davis' reward/punishment hypothesis, I must confess that I now ALWAYS wait to see if someone "stays and participates" prior to offering any comments on what they do ... and these days, even to listen to the song. I don't have time to waste.

:-) Not all newbies first/only post is either (a) "Check out my mixes" or (b) "I want to record at home, what do i need and what should i do?" I've posted almost 80 times (i think).. and still haven't posted any mixes. I will though.. .lol... when i get around to it.

I have to say though, my first experience on a music related web forum was not here.. and it was HORRIBLE. They were mostly assholes posting, and only posted when they found something they wanted to contradict, or wanted to try and show how knowledgable they were, by belittling others. If you asked a detailed question, no one ever answered. They were too busy beating up on others. lol

This site.. you don't see so much of that. Mostly pretty patient, cool people. But i understand the feeling of futility at times. Heck I'm a newb.. and even I want to say sometimes: "There is NO shortcut/magic trick/secret button/magic mic that will do everything. Take the time the read, learn, try, evaluate and keep learning." But i often bite my tongue. :-)

It's just nice to have a place to post. And to listen to other posts. And to learn.

If you are heavily active in discussions on tips & trade, so be it. Thanks, I've learned much. Perhaps one day, I'll return the love. Perhaps not.

If one becomes to busy to contribute on a grander scale, so be it. Get back later. Or not.

If you never post other than your tunes, and are just hunting strokes, you'll get some. Or not. So be it; rock on.

I like asking "Tell me what you think..." when I post. Certainly, I would like kind words that boost my ego. I'm human, I like to feel good.

But this is a free forum; listen or not, post or don't, advise on or critique any aspect of the tune, mix-wise. I, as forementioned, just want to know what you think. Wide catagory.

Poster/postee are free to take what comes and do with it as they see fit. It's not like we're going to run out of room.

Music ain't perfect, and has no rules. It has form and structure, but that's perspective as well.

We all stroke each others ego, and look to be stroked. That's how it is. Not wrong, just is.

Enough! I know nuttin'.
Peace, Love & Thanks!

I've been on similar sites ... I pretty much stopped visiting ProSoundWeb for that reason ... even though I must say that early in, there was NO better place to get information from professionals than there. You could talk direct to some of the best in the industry ... chat w/ people who recorded Elton John's or Tom Petty's albums. It was unbelievable.

On a site no longer in operation, in the mid-late 90s, I got to chat regularly and directly w/ Al Schmitt and Joe Chicarreli ... both at the top of the recording industry profession.

What happened is that the benefit of the net became their curse, as the music industry began to battle the scourge of online song "sharing", and it became harder to make a living.

Plus, every jerk who had a semblance of knowledge and a contrary opinion would jump in and challenge them like they had some superior methodology that would garner .3% better total harmonic distortion or other inane statistic that mattered not.

And like here, imparting knowledge got repeated over and over and over and over ... all the while their business got harder to make a living in ... meanwhile the invasion of the jerks had begun ... so as Matty says perfectly above ... they all went ...

Or not.

I wish I could contribute more than I actually do but it's difficult given the amount of gys asking for help. Problem is these guys then dissapear... I'm pretty sure they don't bother in reading your answers.

GOOD THREAD!!!!!!! I wish more people would talk about their music and share ideas/be more respectful/ make more friends on such sites as these.

Reason being is

A. If you get to know someone/ actually take the time out to listen to what they have to offer as far as their musical creations.......chances are they will keep coming back to your site.

B. Nobody likes an inconsiderate prick.....or one of those "oh yea ive pretty much done everything you have done but better" types of people.....yea you know who you are. Chances are within reading the 3rd line of your responses in recording threads we are rolling our eyes at you........and then moving on.

C. People that are just starting out........SERIOUSLY NEED TO GIVE ALOT MORE RESPECT TO THOSE WHO KNOW WAY MORE THAN US.........There is a Boat load of information that deals with recording.....I promise you will be a more "polished" musician if you just take the time to listen to what those who know more have to say.

Exacty, but I can't for the life of me figure out why someone would take the time to post and then never check the responses. Even JordanD didn't give up until recently (although that's a slightly unique and annoying case).
And I agree with the above posts, I find this forum helpful, and the people friendly and just the right amount knowledgable to make it a great experience. Also, the Moderators do an excellent job here. I'll be coming back for a long time.

Yeah, I think I'm one of those guys at the moment

Hey all, new guy here. I think I'm one of those new guys mentioned who just showed up and posted a song to get feedback on. I can understand the annoyance of that and that's the last thing I want to do. But yeah, I'm a new guy who did that.

I've been trying to learn a lot on my own recently about recording and mixing and don't personally know anyone who's into that aspect of music. I read this was a great site to check out and it certainly seems so, so I posted a song to see if I'd get any decent critique on the mix, etc. I'm still learning so I know it can be better. How though, I don't know.

As little as I do know about it all, I'd love to take more time to hear what other folks have done, read suggestions others have given them, suggest my own, but it's just tough to find adequate time with work and school. I barely have the time I'd like to invest in just working on my own music, you know? I want to be part of a community like this, just finding time to actively participate more is tough, even though I want to.

So yeah, sorry for being that guy :p

Rock on,
James

It's cool, James ... just remember half the problem is solved by recognizing there's a problem in the first place.

No place can stand on the backs of a few devoted guys making all the comments ... eventually it'll collapse ... so thanks for the apology ... and more thanks for just stopping by and commenting!

I run a little forum on a gaming website that is entirely devoted to music, and I instituted a 2:1 rule, meaning for every topic you create with your music, you have to respond to AT LEAST two other topics.

Now while I try to listen to other songs whenever I post one of mine, I feel like I can't really contribute anything worthwhile as far as mixing critique goes.
