you experienced people! need advice on compressors

please help!

background: spent the last 15 years teaching myself a bunch of instruments and writing songs. recently i bought a tascam 4track and am finally getting into this recording thing. the first few recordings i made showed me how badly i need a compressor.

budget: under $150 bucks hopefully. probably will buy used off ebay.

i'll be using compression for vocals, bass, and acoustic guitar mostly.

should i try to get a unit w/ a limiter, gate, de-esser and all that? will i use all that stuff? or just go for straight compression?

brand/model recommendations?

any love you can show me is greatly appreciated!

2 good comps!

1) The RNC @$170 ! Clean,clear and transparent! Easy to use! 1 of the best!

2)Behringer AutomCom. Decent,workmanlike comp offering good features in limiting,comping,de-essing!
Ususally priced from $69-$89.

are you familiar with the behringer composer pro? is that a step up from the autocom? i can pick up a composer at mars for $90, just a bit above the autocom. worth it? anybody?

this BBS is a LIFESAVER.
 
Count, along with the RNC & DBXL comps, I also own the AutomCom.MultiCom AND the Composer Pro, and I find the Composer as my 2nd favorite comp (next to the RNC). Gate response is flawless, not much coloration during compression
and there is no audible artifacts during operation!
Great Buy for $90.
 
which begs the question...

Where can you guys get an RNC for $170?

I have looked online at a bunch of bigger places (Marsmusic, MF, zzounds, 8th street etc) and I can't even find one...

nez - ebay, if youre into that, has the RNC for $175. says new in box, if you trust em. last i checked there were four or five auctions expiring in the next few days.

nez, i went back and looked on ebay to be sure
they have 2 for sale, from a store, new w/ warranty.
$5 shipping = 180 total.
they expire january 16th
