Yorkville YSM1p or M-Audio SP-BX8??

Hey all,

I am looking into powered monitors, my price range is in the 400 –500 buck area… so the Yorkville YSM1p and M-Audio SP-BX8 seem to be what a lot of people are talking about in my budget.

The problem is I don’t think there is a dealer near me that sells Yorkville, so can anyone who has listened to these two speakers tell me what they think?

To be honest I am looking for a setup that sounds good and life like as well as accurate. I will be listening to these for pleasure as well as for mixing. I am into classical, opera and rock and just about everything else except rap / hip hop. Also, it is a big plus if I can crank the speakers up a bit without distortion. I’m not expecting to deafen anyone, but I like to pump it sometimes. Oh, good imaging is a must.

And if there is another good monitor for under 500 smackers, feel free to mention it.

If it matters, I already have a good powered sub. Midrange clarity and tight bass is more important to me than bass power (but that’s true even if I didn’t have a sub).

I vote for the M-Audios. The previous version, SP8Bs are great.

You can get Yorkville on the net and they will tell you the name and address of the closest York dealer. I was lucky; the dealer in my area is local and I didn't pay any shipping on my passive Yorkvilles.

I had a friend over one night and played a few tunes for him through my "new" Yorkvilles and after three minutes of listening, he said, "Order me a Pair of those speakers!" He was not a musician or in the recording business.

The other day a client came in to pick up some CD's I had made and I played a few bars through the Yorkvilles and her comment was, "Wow, those speakers are nice." Of course, she is not in the business either.

For the bucks, it's hard to beat the Yorkvilles. There are for sure better monitors out there and higher prices. It's all in what you need or want to pay.

Yeah, I read all you and Kevzmusic and others said about the Yorkies. Everyone is talking plenty of good, and no bad, but the same can be said about the M-Audio SP-BX8s... so being that both are highly recomended, which is better, keeping in mind that Opera and rock will be 70% of what is played on them, and that they will be used for mixing, and also for pleasure from time to time.

I am leaning towards the Yorkies, to the point where I am already seeing who has them in stock and who can get them to me the fastest :)
but I wanted to get an opinion from someone who has listened to both the SP8s and the Yorks.

I'm in the same predicament Gunther. The good news is I work at GC in the pro audio department testing monitors all day!
The bad news is, they don't carry the Yorkvilles.

After listening to hip-hop, techno, folk (what I do) and soul back and forth between the PS-8's , the BX-8's and the Mackie HR824's, (which, for budgetary reasons, I won't include) I felt the BX-8's sounded bass heavy, like home theater speaks and the PS8's also a bit colored. I've demo'ed a pair of the passive YSM's at a different store and thought they were a tad bass shy. I personally am going with the YSM powered based on my findings on which I sadly get no employee discount :(

Stonepiano, thanks for the input. I have decided to go with the YSMIp. found a guy locally (in NY) who will sell them to me for $389, so even sweeter.

I'm really nervous buying a set of speakers I havent heard though... not going to be easy to sleep till I finally listen to them ;).
 
do you mind my asking where that shop was in ny? i am currently shopping for monitors myself. thanks
