nope
just scored me a mapex black panther premium snare (14 x 6.5) on ebay for $266. someone tried to sandbag me at 11 seconds left, but i prevailed! after hearing all the hype and some really great recordings here, i decided to drop half my "stimulus package" on it. i figure it goes for $480 new, and the pics look pristine, so....bye-bye, thin-sounding piccolo snare recordings!!! :)

I have the BP premium brass 14x5.5. Really nice snare. I've had trouble getting the exact sound I want out of it though. It's very bright and loud, but ringy no matter what head or tuning I put on it.....until today. I put a Genrea Dry on the batter and a hazy Ambassador on the snare-side and tuned it up and that motherfucker cracks now. It's perfect. :)

P.S. - piccolo snares suck poop.

well, have you ever heard helmet's "betty" album? i LOVE the piccolo sound on that, and spent years dreaming of getting one. now i've spent the last 2 years getting frustrating recording results with it. and it's a good one too--pearl custom maple free-floater. it just sucks on tape.

i'm guessing this 6.5" deep maple will be about as chesty as you could handle. and everyone raves about it, so we'll see. i'll get some samples up asap.

and your head choices--that's exactly what i have on my piccolo now. that'll probably be my starting point with the mapex.

I've never used the Genera Dry before and have heard nothing but horror stories about how "dead" it is. Pffft. I'll never use another head again. It's perfect for the sound I want. I don't want full rich texture and a million overtones. I want a dry ear-splitting thwack. This head seems to do it just fine.

Too dead? I'm with you I think it's just about perfect.

sample up!

here it is, and it sounds damn good!

well, in the room at least.

through the OHs the mapex sounds frigging incredible. unfortunately it also gets buried in the mix, so i had to blend in a lot of the crappy-sounding sm57 i had on the snare--i'm gonna be experimenting with other mics soon.

i was just kinda goofing off--things get a bit interesting at 1:30.

WARNING: Non Drummer Interloping

That snare does sound great! So does your overall recording. Great job with the whole kit & kaboodle!

Dude, you're good. I don't even know how to practice to be able to do a tenth of that.

Tama? Thought you got a masters?

nah, remember in that thread (w/ the infamous pyrrho), i was bitching about how getting info on the overhauled masters line was proving impossible. ermghoti ended up recommending the starclassic performers, so i tried 'em out at gc, and was instantly hooked. no buyer's remorse--they look and sound great!

not to mention, the new price lists for masters came out a few months after my snafu with them, and that kit, in masters birch, would've been almost double what i paid for the tamas.

Yeah I remember that douche. What I neglected to mention in the above post is that I was very impressed with your drum sound, and also your playing. I'm such a gear geek.

Anyway, tight grooves dude!
