Wow this is an old recording. Not long after I first started, actually. Just thought I'd post it here for the hell of it to see what you think.

I may redo it (playing it correctly this time ;)) cause it's one of my favorite songs.

Surprisingly it doesn't sound like complete shit at 128KBPS, so I just put it on SoundClick.

You can just click the link in my signature or go here:

Nice - but I don't know it - I was expecting some variation on a Huddy Ledbetter tune.

Thanks, rayc. It's a Pearl Jam song. ;)

sounds pretty good danny.

if you haven't heard the song 'while we cry' by kenny wayne shepherd you should check it out. it sounds a lot like this pearl jam song.

I couldn't get it from the link you provided, so I just went to your soundclick page.

Very nicely done!

Yea, think I'll check it out. I heard the guitarist in Pearl Jam "ripped off" Hendrix's Little Wing, but I honestly don't hear that much of a similarity except for the way he plays it. The song doesn't seem to remind me too much of Little Wing.

Anyway, gonna check out that song, thanks.

Edit: Thanks Rokket. :)

you'll hear some major similarities between while we cry and yellow ledbetter. both are of that fragmented chord style from little wing. all 3 use a similar semi clean strat tone too. the rhythm parts of srv's little wing version has more similarites to yellow ledbetter to my ears though.

if you can, listen in this order:

hendrix - little wing
srv - little wing
kws - while we cry
pearl jam - yellow ledbetter

Hey, no problem!

I could hear the little wing similarity too, but I didn't want to join in an already pretty much settled debate...

It's still a really nice tone.

Wow, While We Cry sounds EXACTLY like Yellow Ledbetter. I listened to the Live version.

The guitar chords for most of this instrumental song are taken from the Pearl Jam song "Yellow Ledbetter." This is reflected in the album title, Ledbetter Heights. (thanks, Brandon - Tuscaloosa, AL)

Still great tone/playing though. I'd kill for that tone. Oh, and that playing ability. :(

I think the live version is the only one recorded. The kicker is both Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Pearl Jam take credit for the song. Both released in 1995. Figure that one out. :D

They both have nice tone and chops and I dig both of their guitar playing quite a bit.

Man, I've always loved that song. Nice performance, too. I saw PJ in Toronto a few years back while they were touring in support of Riot Act. As per usual, they closed with Yellow Ledbetter and it was damned sweet.

Sorry, I didn't read the previous posts, but what is your equipment, guitar, mic, recording medium, reverb, etc.?
Reverb is a little heavy in the 'build-up', but I like it. Where there is more 'ambience' creating a room effect, sweet. Perfect mix of reverb in most of it, stellar execution. If you tell me that is a reverb plug-in, I'm going to shoot myself for paying $700 last week for a PCM90. :( (just saw your signature with a "renaissance reverb"...say it so, mammy, so it ain't so that I spent that $700 :( :(
So you were given reviews...in good turn, let us know your secrets as a courtesty :) :) :)
Great piece, man, great playing, great sound, great production.

Thanks everyone.

This is an old recording, before I bought the Waves plugin. It's a free plugin called GlaceVerb. You should check it out it's amazing:

Anyway thanks for all the comments.

Edit: oh yea, it's a Cort acoustic guitar (with half-way dead strings) going into some kind of PC microphone into a SoundBlaster Live! 24-bit. :/

It wasn't one of those $10 plastic ones it was actually a pretty nice microphone from what I could tell...probably from Radio Shack. Black and looked like a pencil condenser type. This was a couple years ago at least.

Anyway, thanks again.

Well played. The sound of the section with the lead line at 1:41-2:12 far surpasses the instrument and gear used. Way to go.

Thanks, Tim. I really wanna record it again with my new "entry level" gear. :p

Except I'm still using the same guitar. :(

Maybe you can suggest a better guitar? I went to the shop yesterday and tried out a Martin, and about 12 different Taylors. I heard almost no difference in those and the one I'm using now, and they costed easily 4 times as much. Definitely not a difference that would warrant the price.

The other less-expensnive ones (Alvarez, Ibanez) sounded about the same as the Taylors.

I've almost given up on trying to find a new guitar. :(

One suggestion. Sounds in the recording like you were using the flatpick held so it's playing flat, or nearly so, against the string. With flatpicking, you may find that better gtrs open up a lot in tone and sound sweeter when you use the pick at a 20 deg angle or so, where the flat surface of the flatpick doesn't contact the string - just the edge. Taylors I've played tend to be bright, so they need that for fullness. Just my opinion.

Thanks, Tim, that does make a difference.

Still not too crazy about the sound of my guitar, though. And I think a really good sounding guitar would make a much bigger difference in my recordings than any gear I could buy.

To hear the sound I've been searching for, check out this audio clip:

http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/file.php?fid=6984

It's a Martin OM35. I've never played a guitar that sounded anything like that. No stores around here carry it. I could only find it online. :(

keep trying them out danny. it's hard to find the right acoustic guitar. play them all and don't leave out used guitars.
