Now 169% diggier!
Yamaha SPX-50D

Would you pay $70 for one or spend an extra $50 for an SPX-90?

Mmmkay. I'm guessing no one here has heard of the SPD-50D. Which means it wasn't all that hot. Which means I should consider the SPX-90 instead.

the 90 is pretty cool Diggy. I still have a few in some of the live gear racks. But $120. IDK seems I was seeing them around $75. and that may have been 3 or 4 years ago.

And if you google up the SPD50D it just comes up this this thread! :D And another one in Japanese.

Wanna part with one of your 90s and save a poor boy some change? :D

The $120 includes shipping, by the way. The asking price is more like $75 to $80.

I already bought an SPX-90. (Did I spell the model number correctly this time?) Pro Sound Web wasn't particularly pleased with the M350. The Yamaha unit is a well-loved piece of vintage kit.

Listen, Henry. Does a houseful of Casiotone keyboards and a vocoder sound like a guy who's shooting for the aural equivalent of photorealism? Miking drums and tweaking Marshall stacks in search of some elusive "tone" would bore me to tears. I think the ancient 16-bit processor will fit what I'm doing quite nicely. ;)

Yes Diggy. One could equate that as photorealism as long as you don't try and cross over into trompe l'oeil territory. For I don't think that 16-bit processors can tromper l'oreille that easily.

My sound will tromper in the same sense that the Aeon Flux movie did. I want that cartoonish semi-realistic style.

The difference between the SPX-50D & the SPX-90 & 90II,...
Is the fact that there are distortion sounds mixed with reverb, delay, etc.
They are very similar to each other,...
I have couple of each unit, and have been using them since '87.
The SPX-50D is a very underrated effects unit, IMO...it is better than the 90.
If you learn your way around it, just like anything else,...it is a good tool / piece of gear.

Which one has the distorted sounds?

What makes the 50D better, in your opinion?

The SPX-50D is the one with the distortion,...and I gotta say, it IS a best kept secret weapon for guitar.(depending on your taste, we play metal, punk, thrash, hardcore)
Between me, and my guitarist,..we have 5 SPX-50D units.
The only downside to them is the fact that you cannot use several effects at the same time.
This is why we have a few.
The SPX-50D is better IMO, for live, and studio use (and the distortions)...whereas the 90 is good for just live...although, there are a couple effects that can be used in the studio.
Now, is the time to grab these units for cheap,...because people are practically giving them away.
But like I said,..it is all a matter of taste.
We have been using the SPX-50D since '86-'87,...and would never take it out of our tone.
It has this "boost" quality signal that I can't explain (it's not a preamp, but acts like one)...The 90 does not have that "boost" that I talking about. It has somethin' to do with how you set the parameters inside.
The 90 is especially good for the reverbs. That is what seperates the 90 between the 50D.
The 90 excels at great reverb (especially for drum apps),...where the 50D excels with dist. apps.
They are both great units.
There also is a unit that not many people are familiar with that has a little of both of those units...
the Yamaha GEP50. That one was made especially for guitar use. I do have one of those too,..but would recommend getting an SPX-50D over the GEP50. They're practically the same unit,..but a couple different effects on each (not a big difference). Like say,..The GEP50 has a distortion called "punk dist." or "double dist." whereas the SPX-50D has "delay dist." or "symphonic dist."- There only a couple different distortion programs in each.

I don't play guitar, so lack of distortion won't be a problem. I have a TS-9 and a Juice Box that I use with the keyboards sometimes. I was mainly looking for a primitive unit that does early reflections. It doesn't have to do them extremely well, it just needs to do them. I looked at an ART SGE too. Some people really like its flavor. But the 90 is the one I hear about most often whenever vintage effects come up.

Did you get a manual with the 90? They are all over the net.
