Hi All,

A friend has a Yamaha O2R for sale and wanted to get some info on them. I don't know if it's a V1 or V2 but I can find out. I'm a Sonar user and was looking to get something to help mix outside the box with. Currently I have a firepod, some decent mics and handful of other external preamps. I'm not doing this for a living but do like making high quality home recordings for my band and friends.

I'm sorta wondering if it's going to enhance my mixing/tracking experience or just get in the way. How are you guys using it? Do you like em?

By the way, it comes with a meter bridge and a flight case(maybe) for around $1000. What kind of price is fair for one of these guys (V1 or V2)?

Thanks!!!

My first CD was mixed on an 02R. It's a nice box. I have an 03D that I never got rid of cause it's just too cool. Of course the reason these things are so cheap now is that everything *needs* to be 24 bit nowdays. So you'll have to decide if you want to give up the bits in exchange for all the cool stuff the 02R has. I don't use my 03D for recording anymore, and instead use a Mackie Control surface for getting away from mouse mixing.
I'd see if you can test drive it for a weekend. Man, $1000. It's crazy how this stuff depreciates.

No kidding. :(

i remember when the 02R was the bomb snizzle/digaty snap shit.

a good unit, but digital gets left behind fast.

Thanks for the info. I've done a bunch of searching on google about the board but haven't found anything in depth about what features it really has. From what I know some poeple use them as control surfaces as well as mixers. One site said it did 24 bit which is what I record everything at. The reviews have been fairly positive from those that use them.

You don't record directly to a hard drive in it right? I am assuming you use it much like an analog mixer and take the outs into some sort of A/D interface only you can use it's own eq and built in FX. I'm probably totally wrong.

Forgive my naivite on the model. I am just wondering if it would be a nice front end mixer that has some automation built in as well. From the sounds of it, it seems like it's pretty depricated already and what I'm really looking for is something totally different. Myabe I'll try and see if I can borrow it.

Hi,
The 02R96 has 24 bit converters and I/O, but both the V1 and V2 02R were 16 bit. Internal data path was wider, but everything goes in and out at 16 bits. I'm guessing at that price you're not talking about the 02R96.
Still, some great recordings were done on 02Rs, and it all ends up at 16 bits anyway, if you're going to CD. But there's a reason those $10,000 consoles are selling that cheap now, and it's because of it's outdated bit depth and sample rate. It doesn't have to matter if it's for your own stuff, but clients wont like it. Personally, if I didn't have a control surface, I'd get it for a grand. Most SW has 02R support for use as a control surface, and you could switch between using it as a CS for Sonar, and as a digital mixer.

Check the Yamaha website, they probably have a PDF of the specs and maybe owners manual.

Well, I think you guys have just about summed it up for me then. Thanks for all the info. Especially the info about not being able to control sonar. I've been mixing inside Sonar since version 1 and wanted to see if mixing outside the box would give me a new experience that might stimulate my otherwise bored mind. Thanks again!
