Which would you prefer/recommend for someone just starting out? I plan to make my purchase pretty soon and I'm having a hard time choosing.

Thanks!

If you can get the ns10s. I tried to get some but they are scarce here in the states.

I did but a pair of alesis monitor ones and they are a good set of monitors.

This will be actually a good combo, alesis for equalization and mix, and yamaha as boombox world reference. Buy alesis and get some small fullrange cubes for reference and mono compatibility testing. Be fast because i hear some very baaaaad things about alesis company.

Noooooooo!

I gotta disagree with ya here Igor.

I've had the Monitor One's for years and I can't recommend them. They accentuate the mids and I get ear fatigue rather quickly. There are many other choices that are much better than the Monitor One's. Possibly Event 20/20s or others.

The Monitor One's are adequate at best.

I think that alesis are good monitors for beggining, because they accentuate mids, just like ns10, but have better bass extension.
You learn how to compensate screaming mids by precise eq, learn frequencies, and mixes are loud and translate well. Alesis is better because begginers make bass heavy mixes on ns10. I think that alesis is good way to develop "golden ears", learn to listen and experiment with eq, after that change alesis for something active. You can´t get maximum out of ferrari if you didn´t drive little fiat. I use tannoy ams8 active, genelec 1031 active, and mackie hr824.
Lucky bastard i am :D

I would go for actives but I have a reference amp that Kicks the shit out of all active amps. I do have a set of monitor ones as do alot of pro studios, They are featured on equipment lists all over the net. The yamahas are popular too but everyone hates them.

You know if you want to get a good boombox mix, mix on one. Its cheaper than getting the ns10s and less aggravation.

Yorkville YSM1i

Thanks for the tips, everyone.

What's this about hearing baaaad things about the Alesis company?

Now that the Yamaha NS-10 has been discontinued, I'm thinking about getting the Yorkville YSM1i...but I can't find a good online supplier. Can anyone recommend a site?????

Thanks again!

Pro studios use Monitor Ones? As fucking if. Please name some such studios and explain the extent of their use (as opposed to just having them sit in a corner). Shit. Just name some pro studios that even own Monitor Ones. That way I can steer musicians away from studios that obviously do not invest in decent equipment.

As Igor mentioned, they may be adequate for beginners. However, the Monitor Ones are too forgiving, which can make it difficult to make a good mix that translates well to other systems. Yes, users do not mix as bass heavy, but they can tend to not notice overbearing trebel.

I strongly suggest staying away from the Monitor Ones. There are better options for the beginner, like the 20/20's. Check the archives for threads on best monitors.
