Hi guys,

I am Leeking from Malaysia, I have just registered and this is my first post.

I am into guitar playing and write some songs... during my last visit to Toronto last year, I managed to get some recording stuffs from the local music stores.

Now, my home studio consist of a PIII 800, 128M RAM, 20 gig HD, ASUS CDR running CW Pro9 and SBLive! value. I also have a JV1010 and a Behringer mixer and a APEX110 condenser mic.

I guess the only important thing missing in the sound chain is the Monitors! :-) I have been reading the posts here and fine that you guys like the Yorkville monitors, I should have got those while in Toronto cos Yorkville stuff are really cheap in Canada, espcecially in those Long & Mcquade stores....

But, near where I stay now.... the only monitors I can find are Yamaha as we have a Yamaha dealer nearby. I am not some rich kid so I am looking for a budget one.... so far I am quite happy with the MSP5. I think it will do just fine for a home studio application.

Just wanna know what you guys think. :-)

You should probably see a doctor about that....
(sorry... couldn't resist!) :D

Well, what's actually more important is what YOU think - if you like the way they sound, then use 'em! No matter what monitors you choose, you will need to take time to learn how to mix on them........ as long as they don't unreasonably color the sound, you'll be fine... (hell, even if they do color the sound, you'll learn how to translate mixes using them - many people mix on NS-10s and you can't get more colored sound than that!)

Welcome aboard!

whats up Leeking, how international is this forum!! I am in the market for a pair of monitors and am probably going to go with the yorkvilles. I checked out the MSP5s and thought they were pretty colored. They sounded generally weird all around to my ears. Somewhat clear highs, I heard the hi mids but the low mids seemed to be missing and the bass had an uneven response, at times it was bassy and at times not. As if chunks of frequencies were scooped out. It sounded like various frequencies from like 440Hz to 1760HZ or so were nonexistant in certain spots. Also the all around detail was weak. Maybe the pair I listened to were screwed up so if your happy with yours keep on keepin on. But I would try to A/B some other speakers before settling on the MSP5s. I should say though that I am into speakers that are if anything (ideally not biased at all, but theres no such thing) mid-hi biased rather than bass heavy and the MSP5s were probably overall, bass heavy as are alot of the hot speakers on the market now like the M1s and K-Roks.

My.02 cents

Forget Alesis monitors.... you could check out the K*Roks... also any of the Events....

I was about to suggest Alesis Point 7 but Blue Bear posted first ! Sigh :-(

If you really want the Yorkville, you can get them in Singapore. Its S$240 each here. So that's S$480 per pair but you can save heaps by coming down personally to get them. Equipments are always cheaper here than in Malaysia. Things to consider; YSM-1 is passive, big and not magnetically shielded, so you'll have to get a matching amp, bigger space and perhaps in the future new computer monitor if you are not careful.

I know...thanks. I like big speakers and yorkville sells the magnetic shielding for them for $10. All said and done I can get them here in the US in Washington DC for $180. There are a bunch of quality amps on the market now and once you buy an amp you pretty much keep it and can spend less on any speakers you buy subsequently bec youre not paying extra for active speakers.

I know, the M1s blow. The tweeters are made out of tree. :-]

Whats the music scene like in singapore?

music scene here ? none existant ... if there's one its dance music really.

I thought the MSP5's were pretty close to the Tannoy Reveals, except on the low end. I'm not saying the Yamaha's were as good as or better than the Tannoy's, but to my ears, the price difference wasn't justified at all. I'm not about to pay an exta $300 for a little bass that I can compensate for myself anyway.

The MSP5's are compact too, which I like. Big is a waste of space. I haven't mixed with them yet because I'm still listening, trying to get used to them - but so far, they're just what I needed.

wow, you guys are really fast on respond....

what I like about MSP5 is that it is powered.... I prefer active monitors, and I guess MSP5 is one of the cheapest active monitors in the market.

hongteck, do you know the price of the MSP5 in S'pore? It is selling around RM2600 (USD650) here a pair , which is pretty expensive.....

MSP5's nice and small. I didn't like it when I heard it the last time, thought its a bit harsh and not as smooth as I would like it. I prefer my Alesis Point 7

I'm not too sure about its price, but it should be around SGD 600 to 800 range if I'm not wrong. I can check it out and come back to you again !

Thanks Hong Teck....

Can you tell me more about the Alesis Point 7, is it a passive monitor? what is the price?

I heard the Alesis M1 before and I don't really like the sound.....

Point Seven

I have just check the Alesis website, but can't find any info on the Point seven.

Comfirmed that the MSP5 is SGD 700 in Singapore !

Alesis Point 7 is passive monitors. Small and compact if space is a consideration. 5" woofer and 1" silk dome tweeter. It doesn't extent very low on the bass end but depends on what you are mixing. If you are not doing hip hop or dance, it should be fine. I cannot find words to explain why I like the sound, you'll have to hear it yourself. Its like ... in the same way I like a Simon Patrick/Seagull guitar over an expensive Taylor. Also the the price is good enough at around SGD 450-500. I have not read many reviews on them .. those that I have are only good reviews (unless its from someone who has heard a lot of Monitors Ones and not really heard the point 7s before).. one official reviews I can find is ...
http://www.sospubs.co.uk/sos/1997_articles/mar97/alesispoint7.html .. I'm not sure but they may be out of production but you can still see them in the shops.

wow

wow,

I find that hard to believe.... even in US I think it cost around USD500 a pair.

Can you tell me where can I get them in S'pore?

Thanks

Leeking

A bus ride is only half a day I think from Penang ! When you are down come and look me up !

Sure, will do....

Why don't you tell me more about urself... your background, what do you do..... are you with a band or something?

For me, I am an software engineer.... I used to be with a music group back in university and we had concerts and work on a few recording projects. We compose our own song and I play guitar/ vocal in the group.

Last year, I went to toronto for a business trip and check out the music store there... at first I was looking to get a cool guitar, but suddenly I had the urge to setup a homestudio and realise it is actually affordable to me. :) so I bought a mixer, sound module and mic and the rest is history.

Now I plan to made demos for all the songs I've written, and plan to work on Christian albums in the future.
