I'm looking into buying a synthesizer to replace my acoustic piano, but I'm not sure which one to get. I heard that the motif es8 was awesome (I'd like one that's 88 keys, just so I can keep playing classical piano if I wish), but I'd other people's opinion on it. Any suggestions?

Faded,

I have not owned a Motif keyboard so take this with lots of salt...

The specs on the Yamaha Motif synths are awesome with more functionality than I can get my arms around. Are you sure that you need that kind of power? Owning one of these would give anybody a big warm fuzzy, but if you only use 10% of what it can do have you spent your money wisely? The Alesis QS8.2 is a 88 key synth that is highly regarded with excellent key 'feel' at half the cost. It is not the Motif, but it may have everything you will ever need. Go to your local store and pound on each, you may decide that the Motif is exactly what you need. Or not. All the best.

Luck.

thanks for the advice wheel.. I'm not that sure. I'm kinda new to the whole synth thing... but I'd definitely like a yamaha or a korg compared with any other brands. they're just ones I have more access to here, and the ones that I have used (as far as pianos go) all my life. any suggestions with those brands?

I own the Korg Triton Studio, which is Korg's flagship comparable to the Motif ES. These machines are really about as good as it gets, but if all you're looking to do is play piano, then it'd be like using a bazooka to kill an ant!

These are "workstations". They go FAR beyond just playing music. These incorporate a MIDI Sequencer, Sampler, fully automated mixer, my korg has high definition recording onto hard disk (for singing or recording other live instruments), multiple effects processors, microphone preamp, computer touch screen, many sound banks, and hardware expandability.

if you're looking to make music, you can pretty much do it all with these machines, start to finish...my korg even has a CD burner built in.

If all you're looking to do is play a piano, just go with something that only does that function.

Hope I helped.

My 2 lire...

Check for a new/used yamaha s90...

If you sequence with your computer, and don't want the sampling functions of the Motif or Motif ES, then you'll be good to go...

If you want a workstation, then you're in the right ballpark...

I won't quibble with anyone over apples & oranges about whose piano sounds are "the best," your ear is probably better than mine, as I've never played a real piano before. The Motifator forum has a fair amount of info from users about piano sounds and such, as well as dedicated forums for Motifs, ESs, and S90s.

You can check here if you choose:
www.motifator.com

There are probably also boards that have only (or primarily) piano & organ sounds, but I dunno what they are, because I've never had a need or any interest. Maybe someone else will offer up some info for you...

Hope this helps.

thanks for the advice! and yes, I'm looking for an actual workstation. which is why I'll probably be trading my upright in. it's just that I'd like the option of having a good sounding keyboard if I ever want to practice classical stuff too.

is there a huge difference between the motif/motif es?

Yo Super Nova:

I have the Yam Motif ES61. It has stuff on it that I'll probably never use; however, the SOUNDS are wonderful.

Don't know where you live; however, if you could go to a vendor, like Sweetwater in Indiana, or wherever, and give the keyboard a hands-on, that would decide whether or not you want to make the investment. But, for what you get, the cost is minimal--My DX7 cost the same thing as the ES61, give or take a few bucks; however, the ES61 sounds so much better which = the advancement of technology.

Yamaha also has a couple of NEW synths out, which haven't received much advertising yet--they do less than the ES Motif models but may be just want you want.

Like the Captain and Tennile's song: "It pays to shop around...."
