I was really considering getting a motif for my rap music production does anyone think this is a good or bad idea

triton - good
motif - good

I left behind 10 years of Korg for the Motif and am very happy about the Motif ...

the motif would be a good choice. i would highly recommend it for what you are wanting.

If you need the sampling facilities that the motif has to offer, and I assume you'll definately use them, then DO NOT BUY THE MOTIF!!!!

BUY THE RS7000 INSTEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's the tabletop version of the motif, and in the sampling dept., that motherfucker is like WHOA!!!

Instead of only 1 real-time adjustable sampling "track," it has 4!!!!! this means that you can have four samples that you can real-time time stretch (loop city) on the RS7000. Get your Akai MPC-Style box, complete w/sequencer, built-in (motif) sound module, and a fly-assed sampler to boot. Then, if you're recording your own shit and you need multiple outs, you can add the 8 output expansion board. Fill the box with ram and then you got the bomb-diggy shit. Fuck an MPC, then.

Good luck, dog

hehehe.. i prefer the rs7000 too... cause you can do more than one thing at a time on that board...

motif

I don't know what kind of instrumentation you will use in your arrangements but I can tell you the percussion sounds on the Motif are outstanding, better than any drum machine I own, and I have two. The piano sounds are excellent and the action is better than any synth I have owned. Overall, it is an outstanding musical instrument. In fact, I just bought a JV5080 and compared to the Motif it sounds like a piece of cr!p, and I'm a Roland fan. As far as using the Motif as a "music workstation" forget it. The manual is the most awful piece of writing I have ever seen. If they had written the manual in Chinese it wouldn't be any less helpful. The 'workstation' is not easy to use, if you have other recording gear. plan on using it. As for the sampler, I haven't used it, the onboard sounds are great, with the exception of vocals, there aren't any.

Get the RS7000. It won't kill you figuring it out, plus all the other shit I mentioned above.

Yo dude,

check the yamaha vs RS thread out. I incorrectly told you that the boxes have the same sounds, they don't. If you need a sampler or want an MPC-style box, then I still suggest the RS-7000.

A guy posted this link on the RS in the thread, check it out.

Good luck.

"a guy" called Jumpingflash.... ok.... thanx for the applause... :D :D :D

After hearing nearly all demos on that site I am a bit concerned about the sounds (all the same TUNZ TUNZ for techno...)...

Or should I be concerned about the mental state of the users of that site ? :D :D

Man they play all the same music !!!

Techno is for those who lack the musical skill to make real music - or for those who lack taste to choose quality music. Basically, I guess Techno is what happens when people are to lazy to learn to play some instrument ....

Yes, yes come, bash me and tell me how great and sophisticated Techno really is ... :)

Jumpingflash,

I love the RS, and I don't produce techno tracks. Never have, never will.

I was kind of surprised that they we're all techno tracks, too. But it's not the unit's fault, "blame" it on those artists.

<No disrespect to techno heads, I grew up on that shit in detroit, back when the only people who dug kraftwerk and model 500 and cybotron, etc. were kids in the 'hood - I was about 11-12 years old>

jerk off... you must be talking about american techno and moby... I've been playing music forever in rock bands and classic trios, since my dad is a music instructor.. training includes 8 years on the classical guitar, 4 years on bass and two on drums... I've been playing primus and tool on bass and guitar, and been in several bands where we made our own music, including jazz, funk and heavy metal... and i changed to making techno (progressive house and trance) because it was way more challenging and the potetial is sky high compared to regular music... if you don't know dick, stop acting like one and get a fucking clue asshole...

sufficient???

Hey Chris - don't hold back, tell us what you really think . . .

:D

Sorry Chris. Even though I do think that Techno is brain-frickin cheapsh**, I shouldn't have judged people by saying they are just "too lazy to learn to play instruments". Obviously, you are very skilled at playing instruments. What I should have said is that "Some people live under the severe delusion that Techno actually is some form of music!" ... :D

But that's ok. I mean, there are people who think that arm wrestling is a sport. They'd probably claim that it's really challenging, too. Hey ... do you arm wrestle?

Techno artists (as well as any other genre) are equally as talented or not-so-talented as "real" musicians (notice, I did not say artists, as I'm assuming you acknowledge that all who create anything are artistic).

Fucked up that even in your "apology" you still devalue the fact that techno producers still got go through the same process as your sorry ass to create something new. And don't say shit about "originality," we ALL are influenced/moved/changed/inspired by something.

Cats like you make me sick. I'm a hip-hop producer, and LOVE/LIVE BY sampling and tweaking, and twisting shit, and you CAN'T minimize my artistry, you motherfucker. I've been DJing since 85, and I know that what I do is original and artistic. And before you even think it, I play several instruments well enough to claim them as tools of my passion, and though I rep hip-hop all day everyday, I write lots of shit. Of course, that shit isn't a prerequisite for electronic producers, being whatever you call "real" musicians, I mean.

Techno consists of sounds, notes, rhythms, and melodies. Don't know what planet you're from, but that shit = MUSIC.

And if weightlifting, basketball, lacrosse, lawn bowling, darts, is a sport, then arm wrestling is too. Surely involves skill - and the science behind developing it (the best grip for leverage, etc), training - both mental & physical -, and practice. Funny same shit you need do do whatever the fuck you do, even type narrow-minded drivel.

Come on, dog, don't hate the player, hate the game. Even if I don't like your style, I can still respect you as an (dare I say it) artist.

BTW- nothing personal, dude, but damn, you sound like the folks who said rock-n-roll wasn't music, rap wasn't music, andy warhol wasn't an artist, and, and, and...

respect everybody's right to be what they are, before people who think like you are in the majority (if they aren't already), and squelch YOUR shit.

I'm no tiger...

...but the kind of shit you spewed is just so damn tired. I know heaps of "musician friends" (uh, better to call them acquaitances) who say, damn that shit you did sounds really phat, too bad it's not a real bass or real drums, or a sample, or real this, or that's not really music, though. Of course, when I pick up my bass a thump out the same damn bassline they shut up. And more importantly, when I sample that bassline i'm playing, they just get sick!!!!

I love that part.

Though I was heated about your comments, I'd still buy you a pint & kick it watching some world cup games with you (or even listening to some music).

(cont'd)

MCR,

Gotta stand for something though, hombre, or we'll fall for anything.

hey, I gladly accept the pint offer and promise better manners in the future :)

You're on...

Cool. I'll make the offer good. I'm supposed to be in your neck of the woods, (well London) in just over 2 months en route to check out some friends in germany. I'll holla on the board when i'm travelling.

peace.
