Yamaha MG24/14

im thionking of getting the yamaha mg24/14 desk. it appears that it is really made for live stuff, but im sure it can n would be good to be used for recording in a studio with. the one rpoblem with it is i want outputs on all the channels, but from reading specks, all i can see is a main stereo out, xlr and line ins, and inserts, but no direct outs from each channel. could be a problem when wanting each track in the desk coming out seperatley into the multitrack recorder via soundcard, as there is only 1 main out (stereo).

now, i think its possible to get an output from the inserts,if you only put the jacks in half way. this is what ive heard anyway! i was wondering if anyone out there had any easier solutuions to this problem, or even knows what im trying to explain and could actually tell me how it works and how to do it myself? thanks guys

I have the MG12/4 mixer.
I think you can get 6 direct outs from that board.
Use the inserts in the method you described for the first 4 channels, and pan channel 5 to the left, channel 6 to the right, send them to the 'Group Outs', and there you have 6 direct outs. IIRC, it has 6 XLR inputs, so you have one out for each mic.

That mixer has inserts on the first 16 channels, so you can use those as direct outs by single clicking the jacks as you describe.

It's also got 8 outputs on 4 stereo groups, plus the main stereo bus, to which you can route the stereo channels 17-24 using panning & bus selection.

Plus another 1/2 dozen aux buses if you need more.

More busses than you can shake a stick at
 
cheers guys for your feedback. its made me feel slightly more confident on buying this mixing desk now i know i can definatley get some form of ouputs! im still feeling quite apprehensive whether to go for the 24 channel or 16 channel. i could definatley make use of the aux sends and the groups open to me. also, as il be micing up a full drum kit, and probably playing along with other musicians whilst recording, i could make use of all the ins i can get! anyway, thanks for your help guys, greatly appreciated!

I have the 24/14 mixer. Its a great mixer. I use it as a live and recording desk. Im using all but 4 mic channels (i need my drums louder!) FX are okay, better for live use then recording as they are somewhat noisey. You get actually 2 main outs. One xlr and one TRS(sub main out). A mono out..which i havnt used yet because i dont have a subwoofer. I havnt used the talkback or the lamp sockets yet. Much better quality then a behringer. I was debating on the mackie 1604VLZ or the MG, picked the MG because of the 100 dollar difference, very happy with it and you will be too!

the way thats been described to use the inserts as direct outs... would they be TRS or TS cables? also, is there any way of converting these cable ends into L+R? reason for me asking this is the soundcard i am looking at (Delta 1010LT) has 2 XLR ins, and 8 unbalanced analogue i/o. im not too sure what kind of jack i use at the insert socket, whether it be tip-ring-sleeve or just tip-sleeve. also, can, which ever one of the above it might be, this type of jack be converted with an adapter into the L+R i have bee describing?...

this is what i mean...
now, with all the red and white 1/8 sockets, it looks just like the back of my amplifier for my sound system at home, being Left and Right!

im sorry that this may seem ameturish... but if each in is L+R, surely that would mean there is only 4 Stereo inputs?! bleh, you can see (maybe even hear) the confusion going through my brain!!! a simple explanation of this would be muchly appreciated! thanks

That's right.
 
now this is where it gets confusing...
so now, if i was to use my mixers inserts, the TRS cables would be converted to the RCA L+R cables. so, i can only now use4 outputs of my mixing desk in this soundcard which isnt very many!

so, another question, the delta 1010LT and the delta 1010 are different in that the 1010 has 8 1/4 jack inputs. this wold mean easy peasy, i can run 8 1/4 jacks from my inserts on my mixing desk into the 8 inputs on the delta 1010.

the dela 1010LT, however, has 8 RCA inputs (the XLR can be used as line-ins). now, as these are left and right, my TRS cable is split up into two RCA plugs, meaning that 2 RCA sockets are needed for 1 original output (obviously), meaning that you can only hook up 4 outputs from my mixing desk to the soundcard, rather than 8 outputs form the mixing desk (like the 1010). this is the bit i dont understand, why give it the same name but give it half the amount of actual inputs?!?!

I know this is an old thread, but I figured I'd shed some more light on the subject seing how no one mentioned this.

The 1010 and 1010-LT are exactally the same in terms of hardware. Only difference is the 1010 has "balanced TRS" on a rack mount interface and the 1010 has unbalanced RCA's.

The inputs can be used as 4 stereo inputs or 8 mono inputs. Even though the full blown 1010 has 1/4" TRS jacks, they arent stereo jacks, only mono, the extra connection in them is to make it a balanced connection. either way they both only have 8 inputs (8 mono or 4 stereo)

I wonder if the original poster actually needed 8 stereo (16 inputs) or if he just assumed that the inputs could only be used in pairs as stereo. If he truly needed 16 inputs he could just use 2 1010's (or LT's) and it would work.

Bulls Hit,

I have this desk and noticed that it does not have 8 outputs on 4 stereo groups....it has 4 mono groups which can be panned... ? In fact I was very dissapointed when I realized it was not an 8-bus desk. It also sounded god-awful until I realized you need to use the channel pads at all times.
