Im recording drums into my 1001lt card with a yamaha mg16 mixer ..
Im using all of the 8 inputs on my card for recording drums .. Im trying to
monitor bass / drums/click track from sonor through the phones ???
drums are coming through because i can monitor mains and group through the board....bass plugged into a channel of my mixer thats not going to
the soundcard wont come through the phones because its not run to mains
or group ?? how should i do this ??

How are you running the signal from the board to the 1010?

If it were me (I'm using the 16/4 and 2 Delta 410s) I'd use the channel inserts (one click method, or buy the cable that turns the Insert into a direct out) to run to the soundcard. Plug my mics in channels 1-8 or less Bass on channel 7. headphones straight out of the board and you should be able to hear everything you need to hear, keep the faders on the drum mic channels down. Maybe need to push the "ST" button on the Bass channel.

Im running mains out to board through xlrs .... into the 2 balanced inputs on the 1010lt ... 2 group outs ..and 4 inserts run to the card through Rca cables .. I cant remember when using inserts is it pre or post fader ?? does the eq affect the signal ??? so what i need to do is run the bass / guitar whatever through either mains or group to hear it and use more inserts ...

I'm pretty sure it's safe to say that the major concensus is of the mindset that you want to record pre-fade/eq. The inserts on the 16/4 are pre-fade. From a versatility standpoint, you'll get all 8 seperate tracks using the inserts, and you'll probably like it better anyway.

When I record, I use the inserts on 1-4 and monitor with everything else. I've got a monitoring amp on the stereo out and then my headphones I just plug straight into the board. Which leaves me still with the group 1-2 out for whatever I want and the control/monitor out if I want to add a headphone amp or something.

yes, but there are inserts only on the first 4 channels no?

On the 16/4 you have inserts on the first 8 channels

pre -Eq meaning I have no EQ on the insert channels ? only on mains and group outs??? I know my fader doesnt work ..but i can use the gain on each Insert out... Id rather have Eq working on AS many channels as possible but its all good ..still gives me 8 cheap ..relativly good preamps

This is the age old debate I guess. I'm pretty big on the theory that there is not "right" or "wrong" when it comes to signal chain (within reason). If it sounds how YOU want it to sound, then you are doing what is best for you. At the same time, what works best for me, is capturing the sound as dry and accurate as possible. I want my mics picking up exactly what I'm hearing as I play, be it drums, guitar, bass, etc. If I'm not happy with the sound of my guitar, amp, kit, etc, then I tweak settings until I am. Then as I record I play with mic technique until it captures in a manner that I think best captures what I'm doing. Then, once it's captured I add EQ, etc as needed. I think alot of people will agree that you will yield better results going pre-EQ and fine tuning your mic placement, but again, YOU know what works best for you, in your environment and with your gear.
