For those who know how the MG10/2 works, I need some help with getting this mixer to do what i want it to do:

First, the Yamaha MG10/2 manual says that channels 7/8 and 9/10 are stereo inputs (7 and 9 say "Left", 8 and 10 say "Right"). However, when i try to plug 2 dynamic mics in, one in channel 7 and one in 8, the signal from channel 7 goes through but the one from channel 8 seems to be blocked. I am using XLR to 1/4" unbalanced cables.

To give a better picture of what I am trying to do, I am trying to record an acoustic drum set with 7 mics: 2 overhead condenser, 1 snare, 1 kick, and 3 for the toms. The overheads, snare, and kick will go in channels 1~4 (XLR inputs with phantom power), and the tom mics will fill the rest of the inputs up (channels 7/8 and 9/10).

Thanks in advance

Well ... the biggest problem you're going to have is that those channels are Line Level channels. And they're running at -10dBu, the lowest of the line levels.

Basically this means you can plug mics into them - you need a mic preamp for every single mic you use. The MG10/2 has four mic preamps ... so I'm afraid that's what you're stuck with until you get a larger mixer or some extra standalone pres. Sorry!

In response to your actual query, I run stereo signals in to those channels on my MG10/2 all the time and haven't encountered the problem you describe. But solving that question will still not enable you to plug mics into those channels anyway.

Could the problem be that you have the panning set all the way to one side?

No, its not panned at all.

And noisedude, if I have one mic plugged in the "L" channels (7 or 9), it works fine. Maybe not a good sound, but works anyway.

Hmm..wonder why it keeps blocking channel 8 and 10...
Do you think it could be a defect in the mixer?
and also the channels accepts unbalanced, which means mono 1/4" right?

The 1/4" mono should work. I'm looking at the block diagram on p. 26 of the manual, and I don't see any reason why plugging in R should be different from L.

I just checked the stereo channels on mine with a couple of line sources and they work fine. Plug into L and it feeds through the left side, plug into R and it feeds through the right side. Plug in a pair and they are still fine.

However, it would be a huge coincidence for the right side of each of those channels to have broken, so I would still suspect that there's something you're doing wrong. So get yourself a line source, a keyboard or CD player or whatever, and test the channels. You're wasting your time trying to use a -10dBu line level input for mics anyway ... whether you like it or not! :)

Just curious, do the return and 2TRin knobs have anything with what Im' trying to do?
