I have been looking at getting either a Yamaha MG 12/4 or 16/4. But I really need a board where you can mute (and preferably solo) channels with the push of a button. Are the "ON" buttons that assign a channel to the ST fader essentially mute/unmute buttons? Can you solo channels on these mixers?

yes the "on" button is a mute, and it works on all of the busses, not just the main one. there is no way to solo, but there is a pfl button.

Forgive my ignorance, but how is this related to soloing?

PFL= pre fade listen. Lets you listen to a channel or send or whatever before the fader and pan controls, sometimes even if the channel is muted. Handy for setting levels, as it doesn't matter where the fader or pan is positioned, it shows the actual level coming into the channel.

Solo is usually post-fader, eq, pan, mute. You hear the channel as it is after fader and pan adjustments.

Basically PFL is what is coming into a channel, solo is what is going out.

Solo is sometimes called SIP, Solo In Place.

Careful with the volume when using PFL, a channel that has it's fader lowered can be unnerving when PFL'ed if the input signal is hot and you aren't expecting it!!

Depending on what you use to record you may be able to get the same function without it being present on the board. I'm using a 16/4 with my PC setup, 16 outs to the board, I can just solo or mute tracks in Cakewalk rather than dicking around with the board. If you aren't using a PC then /shrug heh

OK, now I have the chance to get a new Yamaha MG12/4 for $200 or a used Mackie VLZ1202 for $170. The guy selling the Mackie says its mint. Which would you pick?

Also, I went and tested out the MG mixers at Guitar Center. The "ON" switches seemed really flimsy, like they wouldn't take well to being turned on and off alot. Part of why I'm getting this mixer is to add a drum machine with individual outputs to separate channels and be able to control muting/soloing and aux sends for each output from the drum machine.

I have a mg 12/4fx that I use for live gigs but not recording. It's a nice piece of equipment for the price (nothing broken yet and its been on the road not in a studio).
My 2 cents.
