How reliable is the load/transport mechanism in the Yamaha MD4s/MD8 mixer/recorders? Does anyone have any experience in getting these repaired?

Your queery is kind of vague. If you have a "new" unit, MD8 or whatever, you should have no trouble with its intrinsic parts.
However, if you have a "used" unit, with drizzled beer down the faders, then you could have some problemas.
I have been using my MD8 for 3 years and have had very minor problems; it's still running fine and it does a good job.
But, I'm moving on to the Yam 2816 as soon as I figure out this box.
Would really like some English teacher, like me, to write a few detailed directions for the 2816 -- would send Kato to be your butler for 3 weeks for the help.
