Anybody tried this combination?
I ve just bought a new pair of HS50m to upgrade my tired old NS10's. Some might argue that its not an upgrade but I think employing some new technology that in principle is from an unforgiving truth is well worth a go, hell Im using computers to record now. I also like employing the idea of an active system knowing that the amp is not affecting the spec out of the box. My NS10s are powered by a nice little 1ru Carver.
So i cant wait to listen to the difference when they arrive. I A/B them with a few other brands and was mostly impressed for sound with the KRK 8 - what i didn't like - to really get it working and resonating nicely with full detail they needed volume. Long loud sessions tend to produce fatigue to easy for me.
JBL 6 & 8's sounded like a good A/B box for when mastering having a better low end extension though lacking enough detail for me in the place i want them - putting together the nuts and bolts of the track.
There in lies the problem with both the HS50 & HS80 low end extension. Its there with the 80 better at it, but the difference in defining it compared to the NS10 is the rate it rolls off. So a sub is now on the menu.
The sub option is merely to give reference not exact detail. Normally I can gauge this from some sort of analyzer or A/B with a Hi fi box anyway but i think a sub will give that immediate sound without a/b boxes etc, creating more efficiency. This is true in use of reference in that the yamaha HS10m recommendation is a sum mix ie mono. So its not completely about detail.
Looking around I can go with the HS10m sub but at half the price the Fostex o.5 is there too. Looking at spec the hs50 rolls off at 80hz with the sub operating downards of 100, requiring you to hit the 100hz roll off on the hs50 to match them. The fostex while i cant find a graph is said to kick in at 70hz meaning that when summed with the hs50 there will be i's say a -3 to 4db deficiency around 75hz. No biggy in my view hell I've got 69 other frequency i can play with.
The yammy is 150w 8inch reflex and the Fostex is 110w 5inch ported design.
The shop had neither in stock so anybody got the hs50m and fostex 0.5 frankenmonitor setup ? On paper i think it will work well.
