just wanted to see if anyone else plays one of these babies...

this was my first guitar (parents bought it for me in '83 or '84) and i played it the other day after years of non-use (i'm getting into writing and recording again..i'm primarily a bassist/vocalist)

i had gone to a local music store and looked at a few acoustics...like a new Takamine solid-top (forget the model..like $800 US) etc ... the music store had a nice climate-controled wood paneled room with only acoustics in there..martins..taylors..cheaper ibanez's..on and on...

well i thought..hmmm...before i plop down a huge hunk of my music budget i'll get me some new strings for my old breadbox and see what she sounds like after all these years...lol

bought a pack of elixir mediums and strung up the old old babe...and WHOA!

man that guitar has a rich sweet sound to it....it sounded better that the takamines i played...i was blown away after not playing for a few years..

neck's bowed like crazy (i've never had it set up lol...just replaced the tuning keys) and the bridge pegs are shot...but she's getting a tune-up...

CDT,

Actually Yes I had one of these. Bought it new in 81 when I started lessons around $200.

My Guitar teacher raved about them for the tone and value. He said best you could get then under $800-$1000 new.

It did have a sweet soft tone. I kept my Takamine so I could record direct but the little Yamaha 335 sounded better for sure.

I play primarily bass and had three basses, three guitars a very anti clutter wife.... I sold it for $75 and my friend just loves it.

Thought I did, but I looked in the soundhole when I got home and it's an FG-365SII... got it in 1982 for about $330. Similar thing, though, it sounds very nice for the price. Still, wish I had my brother-in-law's Taylor...

kool..i definetly recognize the tone......what strings do you use buck?

BTW..i went today to get some cables and picked up a couple of taylor's..($1300 or so) to try it out .....the guitars are definetly sweet sounding, have beautiful wood tones and play like a dream (setup/action/intonation was dead on)..but i dont see/hear $1300 worth of difference......I couldn't pull off any licks on it i cant on my yamaha..thought it was a cut-away and that's nice....oh well to each his own huh lol..

and there was a dood in there today jammin' some stevie ray on an alvarez tele copy thru a crate mini-amp that sounded awesome..it's the player not the guitar...

[edit] i cant spell..geeze lol[/edit]

I use two different types/brands of strings for different tones.

For a smooth, silky tone I use D'addario's (012)
For a brighter tone I use GHS-Acoustic (011)

These seem to work out the best for me, although, I'm open for suggestions! ;)

kool..these elixir's sound pretty sweet:

Light Tops/Medium Bottoms (#11075)
. E-1st B-2nd G-3rd D-4th A-5th E-6th
Dia. (in) .012 .016 .024 (pw) .035 (pw) .045 (pw) .056 (pw)

but not "ballsy" enough.....i use GHS bass boomers (forever lol) but ive never tried their acoustic strings..hmmm...ill try em..

I howl hardedly agree !!

I have my first and most favorite guitar....Yamaha FG180 ...Jumbo body ........early 70's .... and it is the sweetest sounding accoustic i have played.

I play a washburn e-11 acoustic with pickup now a days just to save some wear and tear on the Yamaha.

I bought a used 335 several years ago, but it got lost in my pile of other guitars and didn't get played much. I'm totally new to home recording, and have a very simple set-up, but I tried out the Yamaha today, and with a single mic, I think it gets picked up a lot easier than any of my other guitars. Most of the time, I use 2 mics or a direct line-in from my cut-aways, but when there isn't a lot of time, I can sit down and start recording right away with a standing mic wired up to my laptop. After I found out how good the 335 sounds, I set it out on a stand so I can pick it up whenever I don't have a lot of time.

Yamaha FG-335 is really a very Nice guitar. It can easily be turned into one of the best old-time cheap acoustics.
