I am using a Yamaha emx5000 mixer to record. I have an Audiophile 2496 soundcard so I can record to my PC. I know, using the record outputs on the mixer to the soundcard inputs, how to record two tracks at once by panning, but how do I get each track I use on the mixer to record to a separate track on my computer? Will I need any additional equipment to do this? Any recommendations on how to improve my setup? I would like to be able to view each track (instrument or mic) separately when I record an entire band playing a song. I have seen this done in recording studios, but how do I do so in my home studio? THANK YOU. any other recording tips will be greatly appreciated as I am just starting out.

ideally you need a multiple input sound card like a delta 1010 if you want multiple mics going to multiple SEPERATE tracks. you will also need multitrack software that will handle the recording end. i highly recommend powertracks from pgmusic.com. superb audio and midi (48 track) software for 49 bucks
that i use. just the audio editor alone is worth the money. just try the demo.
you will also need a mixer (eg yamaha mg) with direct outputs on each input mic channel. so for example....
mg direct out 1>>>>delta input 1
mg direct out 2>>>>delta input 2
mg direct out 3>>>>delta input 3
mg direct out 4>>>>delta input 4
etc etc. also look at phase sound cards.
if you want more tips just ask.

Thank you very much for the reply and help. Do you have any reccomendations for a power amplifier to use with the yamaha mg series? I will be using two yamaha s115v speakers (500 watts, unpowered) also with the system, so I need a lot of power. Thanks

with respect i would not use 500 watt speakers like that to mix with.
for monitors i would recommend a pair of yorkvilles(value for money).
any used home fi receiver costing 50 bucks at a pawn shop or used will drive the yorkvilles. just make sure it works well. also put in speaker protect fuses in the +ve lines of a spkr just in case. ie...fast blow fuses.
shack has them. dont pay a mint for spkr cable. its hype imho.
just use good quality.

I need to be able to use the s115's for live sound, so I need to buy my amp accordingly. for mixing I will use Hafler M5. but I need the power to play live and during the recording process. thanks.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend monitoring with those Yamaha speakers either. PA speakers are usually designed to hype the sound - I would investigate a decent pair of monitors for recording use. I personally use Tannoy Reveals and love them. They certainly don't make things sound awesome (which is why I wanted them), but you'll be hearing un-hyped, flat(er) frequency response. The Yorkvilles Manning mentioned get some good press around here too.

For a decent power amp, I'd go with Crown. I own a Crown CE1000 and have had it for 6 or so years now. Thing performs like a champ (both live and now as it sits in my studio rack). The higher CE models offer more power.
