Thinking about buying a Yamaha Custom Recording set for my home studio,
are these really as good as people say or can I do as well with a less expensive Maple set. The 4 piece Yamaha is 1900.00 and I dont think that includes a snare. I was also looking at the Mapex M series maple at around 900.00. I'm into quality without overkill. I know this is highly subjective and I've pretty much ruled out all kits under 900.00 [ excluding hardware and cymbals ] ,I'm just not sure if I need to spend 2000.00 on a shell kit to get a great recorded sound. Mics I'm using are

2- Akg C3000B's for overheads
1- sm57 on snare
3- sennheiser E604's on tom,s
1- Akg D112 on kick

What do you guys think? Reviews on the Yamaha Custom Recording are great but thats alot of coin for a kit without a snare.

cheers,

dont buy the akgc3000

get oktavas or some cheap ribbons

well basicly you dont.

i'm gunna get shouted at by some people who will argue theres a difference between a CB kit and a pearl masterworks but realy the huge factor is this.

Crap drummers who have crap gear who cant tune or havent put on decent skins will sound crap. A good drummer with years of experience who has crap gear will buy new heads and will tune the kit and to 99.9% of the population it will sound better. Also put a crap drummer with crap skins on a masterworks and the pros CB kit will still sound better than the crap drummers masterworks.

Anyway what im tring to say is no you dont. Buy a good kit obvoiusly; but unless your making a lot of money from it, then there is no need. I record bands once a week (im 15 so school gets in the way) and im recording on my pearl ELX. This sounds as good recorded as any other kit ive heard.
Obviously its not perfect - far from it, but what is the point in spending all that cash on a pro kit when if you cant tune it - it will sound poo. Spend it on a cheaper shell pack, buy more heads so you can change the sound of the kit.

evans g1 for a bright open sound
evans g2 coated with a deep rich warm sound with more attack

THIS will change the sound of your kit. Then with the spare money either enjoy (giving it to me's an option :D ) it or spend it on two snares and then you have the option of two of two snare sounds straight away.

Look at a metal AND wood shell. Depending on you music you can have one tuned deep and make it sound big. the other can be tuned higher and have a crack when you hit it.
thats what i recon you should do....
