I have been using this unit for about 7 months, and I'm really enjoying it. I was able to get tracks down in no time. Easy to use, easy to learn. Although I'm still not to confident about my understanding of the EQ and compression settings, I'm learning. Luckily I have friends in the recording industry to help me out.

I think I paid about $2,000 for the unit. Money well spent in my opinion. The pre-amps are actually not that bad. They include a warmer EQ II option. There's a CD cutter, 40GB hard disk, even though that sounds small, it holds a lot of songs (30-40) It's USB friendly and quite mobile if you need to record live shows.

I love this thing, but I know I am not very technical. Anyone else have experience on this unit wish to comment?

Buzzhaze,

I currently have an AW-2400 with the MY-4AD expansion board that is the centerpiece of my project studio. I completely agree with your comments - I've had Roland DAW units, the Fostex VM200/VR800 combo, and a TASCAM 788, and none of them come close to the AW2400. This thing makes every other all-in-one box seem like a toy.

Curious, I just added the MY-4AD this week (see my other post in this forum) and can't determine how the gain DIP's are supposed to be set. Are you using a card in your unit?

David

I am not using a card but I had intended to add one eventually. I went through the manual and couldn't find anything. I don't think the MY-4AD was available at the time it was printed maybe? Not sure but there's no mention of how to set the gains on them.

I expected the docs for the MY-4AD should have made mention but you would have obviously gone through that. I guess a call to Yamaha's tech support is in order.

You're welcome, David. And you might want to check out the "Comp CD/mp3" section there to hear what Yam users have been up to lately, mostly with the 1600/aw16g models.

Hey guys.

I've owned one of these forever... What levels are you guys tracking at? My preamps are always pushed to the max even when recording a fairly loud electric guitar with a SM57. Then again I'm always trying around 0dfs, maybe I should be tracking lower?

I like this thing, I've got to invest into some decent microphones. I used to get so frustrated getting a good level without a hiss over every track with the apex stuff I'm using.

You guys have this problem with decent microphones?

Andy

Andy,
I haven't had issues with the preamp levels, but most of my tracking is done through a pair of Focusrite platinum pre's before going into the board. I typically use a Shure KSM-27 for main vocals.
The times I'm running mic's directly into the board is for drum tracking: a collection of SM-57's plus two AT2020's as overheads, but there's typically plenty of gain for getting a clean sound.
If you're not getting enough gain, you might think about something like a clean 8-channel pre, maybe a Saffire 8 I/O http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Focusrite-Saffire-Pro-10-IO?sku=241133
