Which is better for home studio, boss or Yamaha? The AW1600 is an update to the G16 I believe.

Does anyone know how to by-pass the 1600 preamps? I ask because I have an Aphex mic preamp and would like to use it instead of the ones on the mixer.
thanks! :D

I'm not sure because I don't own the AW1600. But bypassing built-in pre amps on these types of recorders usually involves some type of a line input that avoids routing your external preamp into the recorder's mic preamp. The AW1600 has a single line in on the back, but I'm not sure if this would work. I would take a look at the manual which can be downloaded at the following site:

http://www.yamaha.co.jp/manual/english/result.php?div_code=emi&model=AW1600&cat_code=&div_code=emi

The manual most likely has a block diagram (schematic) that will tell if the line input bypasses the internal preamp.

The other way to go would be digital IN (SPDIF or TOSLINK) but I don't think the Aphex has digital outputs. If you really went crazy you could route the Aphex into a stand-alone AD converter with SPDIF out. Then Run the converter to the digital IN of the Yamaha. Of course, that would cost some extra cash and at that point you are using the Yamaha only as a recorder.

I forgot. The new Aphex preamp (207d) has SPDIF OUT. So if your Aphex is new you should be able to bypass using the Yamaha's digital in. Just double check the manual to make sure it's SPDIF and that you can record incoming digital signals.
