hi all,
not sure if this belongs here or somewhere else....
i'm recording some folky (leonard cohen, nick drake, etc.) tracks with a classical guitar, vocals to be added. i've assembled an inexpensive studio consisting of (i'm going to show my hand here) a Mac, presonus interface, and mxl 990/991 microphones. after experimenting with various steel string mic placements, i.e., close micing, i'm not entirely satisfied with the guitar sound, though that may be because i just assume i'm doing it wrong.
so here's the question(s):
what am i looking at if i arrange an xy or ortf using one large diaphragm and one small diaphragm microphone? is that sonically sacrelige? will my house explode?
is there a better mic placement strategy using those microphones, or do i need to part with the cash to get a couple of cheap matched mics? if so, anything you can recommend?
i'm recording in a small room but have hung some blankets on the wall to reduce reflections. it's important to note that i'm not looking to produce a "studio quality" recording, just something for fun and that sounds decent.
thanks in advance for any advice.
dave.
