That is how you would do it if they weren't side address mics. With mics like this, you would put the stands in front of the kit, centered on the snare. Put the mics next to each other. Spin the one on the hi-hat side so it faces the cymbals around the floor toms, spin the other one so it faces the hi-hat. The most important part is getting the snare in the center of the image. With LDC's it's easier to do a spaced pair.

any pic images of this

i am lost already..... go figure :D Here is another pic like this???

Hold the mics up in front of you, together, one in each hand, diaphragms facing you. Now turn the mic in your right hand so the front of the mic is facing your left shoulder and turn the mic in your left hand so it is facing your right shoulder. That would be an xy setup if you were recording your chest, so set the mics up that way over the drumset.

dont mind the mic actually looking like there facing you to accept audio i would spin them like 1/4 of the way so there facing towards drums.
But they would still be in this exact positon when looking towards the kit!!

this what im looking for???

man im so lost on this sillyhat im hoding my arms out and shit and just dont get it still?? the small diaphram mics make an upsidown v when in xy position. I really need a good pic of this xy position with ldc mics i guess i just cant seem to get the picture in my head of how it should go.

Im trying guys but its hard to just imagine what this is sposed to look like i got ideas but they seem way off from how you all explain i think a good pic would solve everything. I have only seen pics of the small condensors making xy.

You missed my point. The mics take sound in from the side so you have to rotate them so that one faces in the direction of the hi hat and one faces the direction of the ride. You don't have to overlap them or have them at funny angles to each other. They can be side by side, parallel to the ground and spun so that one looks at the hat and the other looks at the ride.

If you do what I said, then raise your arms until the mics are over your head facing toward the floor. That is what they need to look like over your drum kit.

think i got it

here is pic like this

mic should look like this when looking at the kit but would be spun so the diaphram is actually aiming at kit.....

oo <<<<< so if looking at my studio project b1 mics from the front of my kit they should look like this=oo parallel and right mic spun to aim left but still stays parallel like this and vise versa with other but they should look like 2 oo like that when im looking at drums from out front??

OK, lets try this. Set up one of the mics above the rack toms. The cable end of the mic facing away from the kit. (facing the direction that the drummer looks out from behind the kit) point the diaphragm at the snare.

Get your other mic, set it up right next to the first mic, the exact same way. Cable end facing away from the kit and pointing at the snare.

Now, spin the mic on the hat side so that it faces the floor tom side and take the mic on the floor tom side and spin it toward the hat side.

I think you have it. You are trying to aim the diaphragms in an X pattern, with a front address mic it makes a V shape. With a side address, you just spin the mics so the diaphragm points the right way.

ok pic sucks but give's you the idea in my head....... dot on mic over drum is top of mic kinda try to show with arrow to other mic pic i drew in paint

That's it. The higher you can get the mics the better.
