Hey guys, i finally got saved some money for a multi effects pedal, and am gonna ask you one of the most overdone questions of all time on musician forums. I am down to these two: Pod XT Live and the GT-10. The problem is that i cant try either of these pedals right now, so ill hav to ship my pedal. At the cost of ridicule, ill kind of point in the direction i wanna go, so any help would be appreciated!

1. Tone: I really like the distortion on stuff like Limp Bizkit's Chocolate Starfish record, you may not like the music, but the tones are damn heavy. Even sounds on SOAD's Toxicity or Tool's newer CDs are good. Tremonti-ish stuff is nice too. I guess i kind of like the Mesa sound? On the cleaner side, i like acoustic kind of tones. Btw, I really like the Boss metal tones on my Roland amp. That is confusing me even more!!

2. Recording: Going to record at home, am doing multi-tracking. (Does this point to the Pod?). I believe Boss does have USB capability for the GT-10, but i dont know how far it goes.

3. Live: I will be playing live with my band maybe in a month. (Trust me, i can play pretty well, but the irony is that i hav no idea about these pedals) my hunch is either one is ok live right?

am really confused. Help!!!

Hello,
I don't have any experience with the GT, but have used the POD XT Live in both live, band situations and it isn't a bad substitute for recording, either.

I played live with a Mesa Boogie Single Rectifier - the POD XT Live helped me keep the sound consistent night to night, and from practice to a live venue, while giving me additional channels (the Mesa only has two). When it comes to the studio, I prefer tweaking my "pure" Mesa Boogie to get the sound exactly how I want, but I have also used the POD XT Live for studio recording and gotten good results. For a computer, the XT Live sounds pretty good!

I've been using an XTL with Atomic amps, Tech21 Power Engines, Behringer and Traynor amp efx returns, and powered PA cabs (like JBL EONS or EV SX series), for at least four years now, live and studio. Never had a lick of trouble with the XTL. I like the Atomics for the old-school backline amp sensation/style (AR112-50 for cleans and all-around sounds and higher volume levels; AR-118 for early-breakup and creamy amp-speaker distortion), but a powered PA cabinet is a convenient and consistent approach to creating and then using your sounds live, matching what you hear to what come out FOH.

I don't have a lot of experience with the Roland unit (although I do use a Roland MW10 in front of the XTL), but I prefer the XTL over my DigiTech stuff (GNX and RP) for the amp models, lack of noise, reverbs, global adjustments, and EASE OF USE/ADJUSTMENT ON A LIVE GIG. The DigiTech and Roland stuff have more effects, notably acoustic sims and pitch effects, that the XTL lacks. I'm not sure about the Roland, but the Digitech and Line6 units have editor/librarian software.

Actually, you probably can't go wrong with either one if you choose after you examine the effects list and decide what effects are essential to you. Variety and parameter-depth of effects will probably go to the Roland, accurate feel of the models to the XTL, etc., etc. The hardest part isn't getting recording/studio sounds out of either unit---it's getting satisfying backline sounds out of the power-speaker rig/combination that you use live, on stage.

The Boss unit will ultimately be more tweakable, and if you're into really getting into the nitty gritty, this one wins, hands down over all units. For quick and easy, the Line6 will probably come out on top. Don't forget, you can use analog outs too for recording, doesn't have to be USB, etc....although they both have them.

Boss...better effects. More people prefer the Line6 nastyness. I love my GT-8 and use it live about 3 times a week. Perfectly satisfied.
