Remember when we all used to argue over which platform was more DAW efficient & friendly...Win 9x/XP on a Wintel machine or OS on a Mac?

So I'm reading the Bill Gates interview in PC Mag this past month...& come to find out that three-quarters of the OS code is Microsoft code...going back to the days when Microsoft was developing Windows at the same time they were co-developing OS with IBM...& they split up; & IBM takes OS & runs with it?

Can this be true...am I reading it wrong? Does this hold true today? (that's the impression I got from the interview, anyway)

OS just stands for Operating System. Windows is an OS (except for the origianal Windows, before Win95 - those ran on DOS (stands for Disk Operating System). OS X is an OS that happens to have OS in its name.

I believe ALL windows (XP included) still use (outdated) DOS as an operating system. Files are still limited to the old 8.3 names, etc.
For a guy who is supposed to be so smart, Bill couldn't see too far into the future. DOS wasn't/isn't very acceptable to future expansion, but it is the VHS of operating systems.

Um, no. XP is based on 2000/NT which actually have their basis in VMS (Hence WNT). Win98/ME was the last one based on DOS

OSX is has its roots in BSD and Next (Jobs' former company, both UNIX flavors)

I does not really matter what is based on what since both of them hack their precursors pretty badly so very little of any orginal code is still used

Both apple and MS have been biting each others ideas for ever (MS still owns a stake in Apple) so there is alot of crossover.

The line will blur between the two even more next year with Vista and Mac going to intel hardware, so its pretty much personal preference these days

And Bill maybe evil, but he is no dummy. Windows machines outsell Macs 50 to 1 (based on 2004 Mac market share)

I dunno, but OS X is closer to UNIX. However, I've heard rumors of a MS-Linux and its suppose to be killer. But, its just a rumor.

My understanding is that OSX is actually built on top of BSD Unix.
