I'm gonna buy a new computer in a few weeks and I need your input and opinions on XP and 2000. What should I pick?

I have Cubase SX and the Delta 44 sound card. I will have a Pentium IV at 2.0 and probably an ASUS Mother Board.

I just need the most stable OS.

What do ya think?

I recommend XP. I use it with Logic Audio, Sound forge and Cool edit. Haven't had one crash since I installed last year...I would say thats a good track record. Most stable MS OS yet.

agreed, XPpro is very stable...fast, and SX works great under xp.
i have a delta 1010, i run Sx/nuendo/Wavelab and xp is solid

XP-Professional , I had lotsa probs with 2000. 11 days without a reboot on XP so far.

There is no real need for XP Pro unless he plans to use 2 processors or remote desktop/more advanced networking stuff.

My new P4 came with XP Home preinstalled whereas I had been working with Pro beforehand. There is no real difference and Home works just fine for my needs.

Thanks guys! :D

I'm gonna get XP Home

I can't wait to see how fast the Pentium IV will be at 2.0!

XP Home is not the same as Pro and I personally had problems with the Home edition and good luck with XP Pro. And I've had no problems on my DAW with Win2k but I use Sonar and a Delta 1010. hope this helps a bit :D

I have no exp with XP.
I use 2000 pro with sonar and it is very, very stable. I know people who are not that happy with xp.

That doesn't make sense why you'd have trouble with Home, but not Pro. It's the same build, same kernel. It must have been an install issue.

I've never noticed any major difference between any of the computers with XP that I deal with, and there's a mixed variety of Pro and Home.

I don't exactly know why I had the problems. I thought the same about the install issue, but had the same problems on two machines with multiple installs. It was slow, too many background tasks and too little administrator control. Could be the dummy stuff put into Home for the less savy users maybe? I did not have the same issues with XP pro at work though, hmmmm? Could have been hardware issues, but eventually put Win2k on both those machines and my DAW with no problems at all. Just my experience :)

Polaris is right. XP Pro is 99.999% idenical to Home. Only major differences are:

* Pro supports multiple processors, Home does not.
* Pro supports logging into MS Domain networks, Home does not.

Also, Pro doesn't require BS registration (at least it didn't when I got it).

FWIW, I use SX with XP Pro with no probs.

Carefull what you admitt!:p

If you didn't register it, you have the Corporate Licence version which is not available to individuals. Also, if your XP Licence number happens to start with FCKW, I suggest you not install Service Pack 1

I was about to start new thread asking this question. I've just download the XP service pack 1 from Microsoft, and ready to install it... But I need to ask you guys first, does anybody here have any report about anything related to XP service pack 1 ? comments ? Should I install it ? What does it "service" anyway ?

-AMD Athlon XP-2000+
-ASUS A7V333 KT333 MB W/ ATA133, USB 2.0, 5.1 AUDIO Motherboard
-512MB PC2700 333MHZ DDR MEMORY
-60GB 7200 RPM 133 HD
-DELTA44

I have XP, and still havn't gotten N-Track to work without crashing. Whether it's XP or not, i dont know. But there is not much else i can be trying without reformatting everything again, etc.
On the other hand, plenty of people have XP and Ntrack with no problem. so perhaps its a combination of my hardware and xp.
