XP Interrupt Worries

Hello,
I've been told that it's a bad idea for USB ports to share interrupts with another device within Windows XP. I think the main problem was that it limited bandwidth to the USB.
Now, I use a USB Audio Interface with my laptop and I get problems like the Interface cutting out and losing sound. This happens when recording and playing.
My question is this:
Is there any way of changing the interrupt settings in XP if you can't do it in the BIOS? There isn't an option in the BIOS to change any interrupt settings and this worries me.
What can I do?

have you tried changing your buffer settings? that usually cures a lot of the problems
 
Ah yes, I forgot to mention that I have implemented most of the tweaks on musicxp.net and they have defintely Improved things but I still get the same problem. It's less frequent now but is very frustrating when it happens.

what software program are you using?
every hardware and every software has latency problems. the key is to reduce them as much as possible. it'll probably be somewhere in a preferences or options menu. when recording you want them to generally be set really low for the input buffer size. this way the computer doesn't think that much about it when recording. when playing back with tons of plugins you want to turn them up so the computer DOES think about it before playing back. like i said, this fixes a crap load of problems generally.

How do I do this with Audacity?
 
are these settings ok?

Playback buffer size: 1.5 seconds
Playback buffers: 10
Recording Buffer size: 2 seconds
Recording buffers: 2
Background mixing priority level: 2
