We just purchased the Aardvark 24/96 from a friend, and the system worked fine in his computer. Now, however, when we go to play a sound, our computer locks up and we have to turn it off manually. We installed the most recent driver from the Aardvark site as well. We have a new HP computer and plenty of space, Cakewalk Proaudio 9, and Windows XP. We've tried troubleshooting to no avail, disabling the default soundcard etc. Do you know what the problem might be? Thanks for your help!

post your computer confign please in full.
also make sure your hard drive dma is enabled.
also run this test and post results.
get diskbench from prorec.com and run it on your hard drives.
tell me if you get 100 plus tracks reported.
i'll try and help but need more info bout your hp.
for example what do you have in your pci slots other than
the audiophile. any tv tuner cards ? or other cards ?

XP Freezes when playing sound

Hi,
Thank you for taking your time to help!
I have an HP Pavillion with 2.19 Ghz & 448 mb of ram. 124 gb free space. XP version 2002, service pack 2. We don't have any other things in our PCI slots other than the Aardvark Direct Pro 24/96. I went through the list suggested by Musicxp.net (26 tuning tips) and this didn't help either. Today I changed our primary and secondary IDE controllers to DMA if available.
I tried to run the dskbench, and it ran, but the results disappeared so I couldn't post them. But there were 5 'blocksize' listed. The first said tracks 100.72.
I hope this is helpful, let me know if you need other information. Thank you again.

if you get over 100 tracks this is good.
tell me something. are you getting freezes while recording multitrack ?
or in normal windows playing "burps" and other windows sounds.
in normal applications ?
what recording software are u using.?

also , and this is on your own head.
sp2 seems to be giving some folks problems.

XP Freezes when playing sound

Hi, Thanks again for your help.
We do have the service pack 2 installed. Cakewalk is what we would use, but the comupter freezes just when playing any song - we haven't gotten to the recording part yet. For instance, if I go into my music and click on a song, real player comes up, plays it for a second, then freezes and a high-pitched sound continues until we manually shut it off. This also happens with mp3's or I think the ms media player. We even uninstalled Cakewalk incase that was conflicting. I'm thinking we might have to delete XP and reinstall?

for a start get rid of real player.
secondly find one of the small free mp3 players on the net.
less intrusive.
(check out hitsquad.com)
also did your system work ok before sp2 was installed ?
just out of interest a nice multitraker i like that seems to run on a lot of pc's fine is multitrackstudio.com.
please download it and tell me if it runs ok.
if it runs ok it could be a cake config problem.
if i remember cake comes with some sample songs.
do the sample songs play ok in cake. ?
also please list what you have in your pci slots.
this is all clues so i can help.

also a point to remember when buying pc's in the future,
try to buy a open standard "white box system" . if you can.
rather than a name brand. this is what i do and many other tekkie engrs.

XP Freezes when playing sound

Thank you! I will do as you suggest. I also wanted to note that the following is a problem:
When I go to the device manager, and click on the Aardvark device, resources tab, it says “The currently installed Device Driver Does not support plug and play.”
On the MS XP help site it says XP no longer supports non-plug and play devices, so I have to somehow make it understand my sound card I’m thinking? Or get a different sound card?
I'll get rid of realplayer then. We only have a modem plugged into the other PCI slot, and there were no problems playing sound at all prior to installing the Aardvark.

before giving up i would suggest you contact ardvaark tech support
and see if they can resolve the issue. was your friends pc running 98 then and not XP.

Yes his computer was on 98 I believe. I contacted their support via email and left messages but nothing yet. I'll keep trying though...thanks for your time and advice. I'm not sure how to make the device support plug and play but maybe they will know since it is supposed to be compatible with Windows XP.

Having it plug and play compatibility is no great loss. I always manually install drivers and hardware and don't trust M$ in doing it for me because they usually give a generic driver that creates problems. It is best to go directly to the manufacturer and download the latest drivers from them and installing it yourself. Kick out that SP2..A lot of problems. What size is your Power supply? If you can look at the rails by using a diagnostic program see you 12v readings it should be no less than 5% from 12.00. If it is like 11.50 or less I would start looking for a higher wattage PSU. A lot of problems are found by not having enough juice in the system to run everything. As for win98 support-M$ quit supporting that OS since Jan 04. Along with Window's ME.
