Mornin'.

I'm about to head out to pick up XP Professional and just need a couple of amens that I'm doing the right thing.

I'm running Sonar 2.0 and ME right now and am hoping XP will be a more stable platform for my recording endeavors.

I use my system strictly for acoustic audio recording. No MIDI at all.

Also looking for tips/thoughts/pitfalls of things to be aware of. I want to ensure that I'm running the best possible recording software combo.

Currently:

Pentium 4 1.4 Ghz.
512 megs RDRAM
60 gig internal drive (7200 rpm)
80 gig external Firewire drive (7200rpm)
Tehama i850 chipset
Delta 44
SB Live Value

Thanks in advance for any info you can pass my way.

Earl

PS - I tried to do a search using "xp" as a keyword but was informed that it wasn't a long enough string to search by. Any search tips?

I'm still running Win ME, so take this for what it's worth.

Everything I've read says that XP or Win2K are the best, most stable platforms for audio. Most people are now recommending XP, provided that there are drivers available for all your hardware (and leaving the registration issue aside).

Also, I understand that the Creative WDM drivers for your Live card are a problem with XP/Sonar. The input/outputs show up as mono. The solution is to use the Microsoft drivers (which should be on the XP disk).

The other thing I've seen recommended is to disable ACPI. This needs to be done when installing XP, and I'm led to believe it is not intuitive and very easy to miss. Maybe someone can give you specific instructions on how to do this.

Good luck and post back and let us know your findings.

#1 - You don't need to spend an extra $100 on XP Pro. XP Home will work just fine. The only reasons to go with Pro would be if you were using a dual CPU setup or needed the more advanced networking features like Remote Desktop.

The native XP drivers for the Live! cards work jsut fine but like dachay2tnr said, the ones on the Creative site absolutely suck. There is no additional work that has to be done - XP detects the Live card during installation and installs the appropriate drivers.

I have been using the Live! card with my Audiophile 2496 and never bothered disabling ACPI - everything works just fine the way it is. If you choose to disable ACPI afterwards, it can be done as well.

brzilian - while you can disable ACPI after installation, I'm led to understand that the results are not the same as when disabled during installation.

Disabling ACPI, btw, allows you to put all your devices on their own IRQ's. As brzilian states, you will not necessarily have problems with it enabled - but you might. Were it me, I would disable it.

Amen, good luck...Should be more stable than ME, but make sure there are drivers :)
