XLR or line in on my mixer

I'm mic'ing my guitar amp with an sm57. The cable I have for my mic has a 1/4" balanced connector so I have to plug it into the line-in on the mixer. But, should I use a cable with an XLR connector instead of the 1/4" so I can plug into the mixer's XLR input? Will there be any difference in the sound? The mixer is a Behringer UB802.

Thanks!

You definately want an XLR on each end. As it is, you're bypassing the mic preamp (or at least greatly attenuated) if you go into the line in rather than the XLR.

I figured that might be the case. But, the gain knob still fuctions so I assumed the preamp was still working. Although, I have to turn it almost completely up to get a good level. Guess I'll get me an XLR cable. Just wanted to make sure I needed to.

Thanks!
