all these soundcards with multiple inputs but not many seem to have xlr inputs.. its seems stupid to use a stand alone mixer when i could be mixing in cakewalk... i never need to record too many inputs simultaneously, but frequently need two mics...
any suggestsion for my interface choice? what card/etc would suit? would it be possible to just use my tascam 424? (i currently have a SB live! 5.1 sound card)

cheers (im a newbie btw!)

Generally you will not see XLR inputs unless there is a pre-amp built into the connection. Many cards - e.g., the Delta 1010, have multiple inputs, but no built in pre's.

In these cases you will need an upstream pre-amp or mixer w/pre-amps, and this is where you would find your XLR input.

Again, this is a generality, not specifically a rule.

this is GENERALLY true with pro-sumer cards...you start walking in the high-end waters...I.E...lynxtwo and up...line ins are in XLR configuration with no pre amp...

so how do i get my mics into pc?

so how do i get my mics into my pc?

would this work?

can i connect my tascam 424 line out to the line in on my SB live sound card? and then use the xlr inputs on the 4 track? that way i could use two tracks and two mics to mic up my amp and record them as one (pre-mixed!) track on cakewalk yeah?

can i get a cable that converts RCA out on 4 track to 9mm line in jack on sound card?

cheers

get an aardvark cirect pro q10, it retails $830, i recently got one, i am more than satisfied. it rules. just finishing recording a band, i will post it on the forum when done mixing. it has 8 xlr/lineinputs and also another digital input(I dont use) but it is nice being able to just plug mics straight, and suprisingly the mic pres are quite good sounging. i would definitely pick it again, if i had to buy a new multitrack recorder(or a second one)

You need to bring the signal of your mic up to line level with a preamp. You may be able to use your Tascam for this, I am not familiar with the unit. RCA to Jack adapters are easy to find and cheap. There are many opinions on budget preamps on this site if you use the search facility.

Cheers,

Nathan.
