The China cymbals are great sounding (most of the time) but they break easily.

I agree, but some aquarian cymbal springs will help the breakage issue immensley.

i've got a 10" (or is it 12"?) wuhan china that i got for $10 or something from Musician's Fiend a couple years back. i LOVE it. it's thrashy and nasty--it punctuates well and decays quickly. and it's dark sounding. everything a china should be, IMO. haven't broken it yet, although i did break the Tama stand it was on.....

can't vouch for the crashes or splashes....but i like the 1 wuhan china i've got.

cheers,
wade

I have two of their chinas, an 18 and 12 I like the 12 much better but both have their uses, I also unfortunately own one of their splash's and its god awful. It's decay is terrible, sound like someone smacking a piece of sheet metal on concrete, the initial attack is ok at best but I would never buy a wuhan that wasn't a china, learned my lesson the hard way.

Sounds great

I got one a while back...it sounds great. It's a 16" and has a really trashy sound. It is a bit loud and can be harsh, however, depending on how you hit it. I've never heard any other cymbal like it. Check out neil peart for an example (RUSH)...I think the song "subdivisions" you can hear it in use towards the end.

I had a 10 inch splash that was my favorite, until it broke. There is a lot of difference from cymbal to cymbal with this company. I go down to Guitar Center, they have piles of these things, I go through and pick the good sounding ones. Some of them are terrible. If you pick the one with the lowest pitch, it is usually the best.

DON'T ORDER ONLINE! lol their quality consistancy is CRAP. I had to go through 8 of those 12" fuckers to find 2 that sounded decent. I bought one, but I took it out of my set, I needed the cymbal stand to mount this old ass bell i got.

Yeah, definitely don't order online. If you have a GC around to go check them out at, you might find a good one - I have a 18" china that I like pretty well. If you find a good one, it's totally worth the money. But like other have said above, their consistency is terrible. Just listen to them in person, and you'll be ok.

I have an 18 and 20 inch china, both sound awesome, but my 18 inch started cracking on the reverse bend section so I cut the whole thing down to make a really good sounding fast splash, it totally rocks, pure attack and supper fast decay, no sustain hardly at all, and it records really well, perfect for quick accents that get out of the way.

And the other day I took my 20 inch and drilled a hole through it and let it hang from a string so I could slap it with my hand, makes a good cheap wind gong that is really subdued, but still makes itself heard.

Cheap cymbals are fun to expirement with too.

I have a 22" wuhan china and i love it. the guy in the store recomended i checked it out and it was really cheap too. :)

That's the problem with hand hammered cymbals. It all depends upon who hammers it, and how much endurance they have. Years ago, I read that the best cymbals that Zildjian made were done on Wednesday mornings, because it had to do with the psychological effects of the workweek on the person doing the hammering.

That was one of the reasons I switched to Paiste - since they use foot controlled pneumatic hammers - there's no hammer swinging arm to get tired.

I heard some of the Wuhans that sounded great at a local GC, but I've heard some of them that were really rotten sounding.

I like the sound of Paiste, but I break them too easily. It seems like they use a softer metal than Zildjian or Sabian. The bottom line is that it really isn't a good idea to buy cymbals without hearing them first.

I loved the 14" wuhan china I used to have. They make the lowest pitch trashiest cymbals ever. Hardly any sustain either until you get up into the big sizes, which is great. I played stints of metal/hardcore and hit this cymbal harder than anything else in my set, never broke or even cracked it. As far as I know some punk kid is still beating on it today since I passed it on.
