WTF is this?

OK I wrote this song, still working on the mix (of course, advice is ALWAYS appreciated) but I'm having a hard time trying to figure out WTF it is. Is it pop? Is it alternative? Some weirdo described it as Mariah Carey meets Alanis Morrissette.

If you have a minute, take a peek, let me know AND tell me what needs to be worked on. This is my pet project (as opposed to my previously posted song which was the hubby's).

Thanks in advance.

It's called "Once Upon a Desolation".

It's Super-Compressed New Age Pop.

Can't listen loud enough here at work to make suggestions. Sorry!

Not bad at all,

I dont know what genre I would stick it to, but instead of Mariah or Alanis I would say more like Tori Amos in alot of parts, which to me isnt a bad thing in the least. I think it would benifit from more of a cleaner piano type of sound instead of that artificial synth tone ur using, and by all means bring that voice out. I dont know if you had some chorus aiding your vocals or not but it definately seems like you have the goods in the larynx department.

Right on.

Nice song again, but again, I do not care for those drum sounds.
I like your voice and the song. I think the mix might be compressed to death though, so maybe someone who actually knows what there talking about, (unlike me,) can help you.

later.

wig- tori amos? you need to listen to more tori bro. and be sure to let people know that you are listening to their cuts on headphones, because the sound is much different from stereo speakers and even more so from studio monitors. i agree with him though that vocals sound good. i think they should come out of the mix more. i really like the renaissance feel to the alternating melodies. tight drum beat too, but the kick needs to push some more. what are you using to process the beats and melodies? the lyrics are a bit intense. i'm curious to know what you husband thinks of it. i know that if i sang those lyrics, my girlfriend would be on me about it forever :D good job. i will listen to more.

come check me out at

I think agree about the "cleaner piano" now that I listen to it again; thanks for the suggestion. I think my husband tends to appreciate the artificial sounds more, but I'm more of a natural girl myself if that makes sense.

There was no chorus added to vocals, we just doubled in some places.

Thanks for listening!

I'm sensing a "over-compression" theme in our songs here LOL. I think maybe our monitors aren't cutting it; it sounds just fine on both of our speakers. What about the drum sounds do you not like? Thanks!

Which melodies? As far as the beats, we're using a D4, a D5, a drum station, various drum samples.....

My husband loves the song. Yes I agree the lyrics are intense (IMO) but they weren't written about him. They were more geared toward the ex-husband. It's the first song I've ever attempted to write and I know they say to write what you feel... <shrug> I was a little bitter and angry.

Please don't think that I don't like the song, it's a great tune, and I really like your voice, but to my (un professional) ears, the drums sound a bit cheesey to me for such a good song. I don't really know what I'm talking about, so please don't mind me,
but I think BLUE BEAR gave you some tips on the other tune, that could maybe fit this song too.

AAAHHHHH, don't listen to me, love the lyrics, great song that could sound even better I'm sure. Maybe warmer though?????

Don't bother listening to my stuff, I'm sure it doesn't sound as good as this. I think this was a "rant" of some type. :)

Uh oh, I dared challenge Samich's'ss...sss Tori Amos expertise and was shown up by his superior knowledge. And I also learned that it is a waste of time for ME to critique the posts of the wonderful folks at homerecording.com on account of my low budget restrictions. So from what I gather: If im listening to soft piano type music such as this, what I'm really hearing is raunchy, muffled, distorted death metal because of the headphones?

Oh.

All im saying KC is what I thought of when I heard it, And more importantly I'm saying it's a good song. (Oh yeah and im supposed to let you know i'm hearing your cut through head phones) so i could be mistaken and your song might really suck ass after all;)

That quote thing didn't work out too well huh.

Please forgive me im mildly retarted

wig - you make a valid point, but not really.. listening to a persons tracks through cheap headphones is like eating pussy in your dreams and trying to talk like it was fo real, whereas, listening to a cut through flat response monitors will give you an accurate picture of what's going on in the track. example...you listen to the cut through your headphones and hear no bass, so you say.."turn the bass up, can't even hear it." get my drift grasshoppa?

Haha, you made me spill my coffee with that analogy.

I'd listen, but I went back to windows media player, because winamp kept crashing my computer several times a night, and apparently wmp, doesn't work with your tunes. I use the download feature, and wmp streams it that way...apparently...

Dang Mix, I don't know what the problem is. Hubby doesn't feel comfortable having users download the music which is why it's not an option there. But I DO appreciate your trying several times to get it to work.

Wig, LOL ... you didn't hear the death metal in that song? :D Thanks for the listen.

Andddd Sabbath, I'd LOVE to listen to your tunes if I could FIND the darn things. Help? :) I'm not proficient enough with NWR yet to find 'em without links. Ohhh, yanno what, never mind. It just occurred to me to check other threads in the clinic. I'm a dork.

out of curiosity...is there a difference [safety factor] in not being able to download, as compared to if I streamed something and recorded to my DAT (or another hardrive)? I'm losing the logic here...:)
