For a reflection filter in my small untreated room, I have had success with hanging a couple sleeping bags over mic stands in a V-arrangement. Then I put the mic well into the V aiming out, and I sing into the V. This minimizes the sound getting out into the room in the first place. I also hang a sleeping bag on one mic stand behind me, to minimize any reflected sound that does make it out from coming back into the front of the mic. This made a tremendous difference in vocals in my small room. Something you might want to try before laying out $300.

I put my mic stand in front of a corner bass trap with great success.

pics of guerilla reflection filter

anyday wanted a picture of my DIY reflection filter using mic stands and sleeping bags. In addition to this V-shaped one, I hang another bag on one stand behind me to catch reflections coming back into the V. I still need to treat the ceiling a bit, and bass trap the corners (now using rolled up sleeping bags there), but this simple hanging bag arrangement was effective at minimizing early reflections from this small bonus room (W=3.7m L=6.8m H=2.4m). I was doing a mic shootout in the close up pic, so I had the V opened up more than I would normally have it if I were using it with just one mic. But you get the idea.

get a couple of pieces of OC 703, cover them in burlap or some fancy acoustically transparent fabric, connect them in a v shape and figure out some way to mount them onto a mic stand with some brackets and you'll essentially have the real traps pvb IIRC.

i do like my sE reflexion filter though...

For home VO work, I have been using a DIY setup combination of (703ish-ideaish) panels, blankets (clipped to dowels suspended from ceiling hooks), and Auralex X-pander triangles and getting decent results, but I have to be extremely careful about placement.
I just picked up an sE reflexion filter today, and am looking forward to hearing the difference! I think that it will give a lot more options in how I can use my space to better effect, and with more flexibility, and portability, for VO and for my little bass amp.
I've also been thinking about creating a small portable setup for VO work and auditions on the go, and this should round out my setup nicely!!

I'm also looking for a cheap way to do portable room treatment. But I remember reading somewhere that putting the thing behind the mic was actually not as helpful as putting it behind you if it is a cardioid mic because it picks up the reflections from behind the vocalist. Does that make sense? Am I making this up? I can't remember exactly where I read it.

I remember something about that too.

gehauser....what say you try it both ways and see which way sounds best.
??

Inquiring minds and all....

I have tried it both ways. With both filters, I run the risk of eliminating too much of the high frequencies.

So it is a matter of how many highs you want to knock out. The V-filter behind the mic prevents sound from getting into the room in the first place. The bag behind the singer reduces any remaining reflections.

I would say the V is the most important, then add or omit the bag behind the singer depending on how much of the high frequencies you want to reduce.
