WTB: Pevey Scorpion 12 Speaker or Rebuild Parts, Or Pair of 12's

Just another guy, really.
Got a Peavey amp with a buzzing Scorpion speaker. Anybody got either a good Scorpion 12 or the parts I need to repair this one (Peavey Scorpions and Black Widows are field-rebuildable.) Alternately, a pair of 12's that are as good but will cost me less than rebuilding the Peavey...

redoing the scorpion shouldn't be but around $50-$75 or so. Seems like it'd be hard to get a pair of 12's for less than that.
 
It's not worth fixing a scorpion speaker as they sound horrible to begin with. Your best bet is to buy a brand new Eminence or Warehouse speaker which would cost about the same as fixing the P.O.S. scorpion.

well, and that's true too of course. But it could be that he likes the amp the way it sounds now.
And sometimes a Peavey speaker will match well with an amp.
An example ..... I bought a Blues Jr. about an year ago and just flat out thought it was the most overrated POS I'd ever played thru. And I TRIED to like it 'cause it's small and easy to deal with for my softer gigs. I tried different tubes .... I tried a Weber 12 in it .... and I tried an Emminence Legend I believe it was.
Nothing helped .... the amp was just bland and nothing sounding.
So as a last ditch effort I stuck a Peavey Black widow in it which, like the Scorpion, is a speaker that I think sucks for guitar. It's more of a stage monitor type speaker and makes guitars harsh and crappy sounding.
Holy shit ...... it transformed the amp and transformed is not an exaggeration.
I was very surprised to say the least ..... I only tried it for the hell of it and was already lining up a buyer for the amp. But now it's one of my main two gigging amps specifically because of what that Black Widow piece of crap did for it.
Why I don't know but there was some sort of synergy with that particular amp.

But yes, in general I wouldn't think that Scorpion's a good choice for git.
 
Well, everyone is entitled to their opinion, I suppose. Ocnor, as they say, I will take yours "under consideration."

Actually, I may install a 12" speaker I have hanging around here, but the amp has a rating of 120 watts per channel- Scorpions may not be the sweetest sounding speaker, but I want something in there that can handle the power.

Local speaker shop quotes me $55 to recone the Scorpion. It would cost me $10 more than that just to get the parts.

So. Lt. Bob, are Scorpions more PA speakers, too? I could put them to very good use thusly, if they are.

no not really.
they are meant for guitar. Whether you like 'em or not is a matter of taste.
I actually haven't ever fooled with but one of them and don't really have a strong opinion on them.
The Black Widows are more for sound reinforcement or stage monitors in general but, as I mentioned, one of them brought my Blues Jr to life.
Everything has its' place and I don't tend to believe in hard and fast 'rules' about such things because there can be so many variables involved. If you like it ..... that's all that matters.

I just bought two Peavey SP5's with 15" Scorpions in them for smaller shows and what not. I think they do the job just fine for Live reinforcement...that's why they came in the speaker!
 
he was asking about the 12's which originally started coming in Peavey Guitar amps but they nowadays push their Blue Marvels and such for git.

But yes, the Scorpions are basically their less expensive version of the Black Widows .... smaller magnets nd voice coils ..... lower power capacity.

As I said ..... I don't believe in 'rules' about a lot of this stuff. Whatever works ..... and, in general, I find Peavey speakers to be more useful for sound reinforcement. I actually like Black Widows quite a bit for that.
They're not JBL's but they're so cheap and they do perform well.
 
I should have mentioned, I am not keeping the Peavey amp (Stereo Chorus 212) for myself- it's either going to my son's rehersal studio business, or up for sale. So, should I...

1. Recone the buzzy Scorpion 12, at $55, and use them both in PA cabs- and buy two Eminence or similar speakers for the Peavey Stereo Chorus 212? or;

2. Recone the Scorpion, and put it back in the Peavey amp?

Frankly, I am a bit disappointed that the "field repairable" Scorpions are no less expensive to re-cone than most others, but that feature could serve David well, if someone over-drives the speakers.

Does this amp have any collector value? I would imagine it has little or none, but if it has any, the original speakers would help, no?

Anybody have any budget suggestions for replacement speakers for this amp?

Would VERY high power-rating speakers- the Eminence Commonwealth 12 is rated at 225 watts- so they are less likely to fail in the rehersal studio? But those are 8 ohm speakers- the amp has a rated power at 4 ohms per channel. It will lose output, right? And OUCH, they are $134 EACH.
 
well ..... do you HAVE PA cabs that use 12" speakers? That's the key. If you have some PA cabs that use 12's the Scorpions would be useful but I generally use stuff with 15's for PA and it is way more common. I certainly wouldn't buy a cab specifically to use those Scorpions in.

About the cheapest I see 12" speakers for is maybe 25-30 bucks apiece so it looks like 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. I'd just do whatever was the easiest.
But if PA is a big need for you ...... then I'd put the Scorpion back in the guitar amp and get to researching PA cabs. There's some not-sucky stuff available for fairly cheap nowadays although certainly a lot more than $55.
 
Ah, gotcha. I was gonna say....I can't imagine it'd be a good speaker for a guitar amp :p
