writing melodies for hard rock songs

alright, im the singer of a hard rock band...sometimes i'll be stuck coming up with something for a song and ill come up with 10 or so melodies to a verse of a song and none of them sound right...soi just go back to dark speaking /grunting/growling verses and save singing and melodies for the chorus. i was wondering if anyone had any tips for coming up with melody lines for hard rock music or music in general? this seems to be my main problem in terms of song writing.
 
Using your imagination, imagine what the melody would sound like if a band you like were singing it. Imagine what it would sound when hearing it for the first time. Get inspired by the tune you're listening to and just let your imagination wander. Try laying down, closing your eyes, listening to the melody and play with different vocal melodies in your head. This is probably the best advice I can give on coming up with melodies.

Oh, one other trick you can try. If you play guitar, try to work out a slower solo for it. If you come up with something really inspiring, you can use it as a vocal part instead.

Give it a shot.
 
so if there's chord progressions during the jam, grab a handful of notes from them and pick a rhythm that already exists on one of the other instruments, stretch it over 4 bars and repeat

I usually stick to minor pentatonic...hover around the 3rd, root and 5th of the scale... always remember to start and/or end phrases on different beats between verse/chorus... syncopation....its all about rhythm.
 
I try to hum the vocal lines and come up with guitar parts that match it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It depends on the song. I've even written vocals to a melody that I came up with.
