wow this sounds like crap

I finally got bass, drums and an improvised rhythm (sorry...) done into Sonar, then selected all, and exported to mp3.

It sounds really shitty, there are holes in the equalization, even after playing with it. What am I doing wrong?

I'm using Fruity loops for the drums in this, a cheesy VSC bass, and my guitar through ReValver.

The point is, I tried to make a template, and it sounds like cheese. Is it ReValver (Ibanez 560 guitar...good enough I think), VSC bass, and fruity loops drums.

More of my midi ignorance???

Please excuse the guitar, I've had a decade hiatis, and just bought it 2 weeks ago.

How do I make a cool template with bass, drums and my 'normal' guiter sound?

god i don't even want to think about lead.

First of all, Shawn, I wouldn't say it's a crap !!! I must admit, it's a good enough work for Fruity loops based kind of project. I've tried to analyze the song with spectrum analyzer, and everything is normal. Covering almost all frequencies. Bottom to high frequency. So I think it's not equalizing issue. And since it's only consist of three instrument (Drums, Bass & rhytm guitar) you may want to try adding things as the lead part (vocals, solo guitar, etc...). Did you export the whole drum kit into one stereo wave and import in SONAR ? This way might little hard to remix the drum with SONAR. Once I've tried using Fruity loops (the demo) and not quite happy with the result (IMHO). I mean, I like to sequence 'em better with SONAR using MIDI rather than Fruity loops. I didn't say it's bad, just not my kind of work :) I think you should try using those DXi in SONAR if you like more variation on the drums and bass. The guitar ? Damn... you're thousand years beyond me with ReValver :o I always want my Gibson Les Paul to sound like yours. Oh, one more thing, you'll get better replies on this subject if you post it in the clinic rather than Cakewalk forum...

Sonar drums are a step way out for me--I'm very used to working with patterns, as I've done that since recording with drum machines. FL is closer to that, for now...but I'll get the Sonar drums working eventually.

Considering a drum machine, but some people have been trying to talk me out of it, saying it's a step backwards and just be patient and learn Sonar.

Right now, I'm using the freeware Directixer (hence the silly beep near the end) to bring FL and Sonar together in a 'live' way..

Filling it out, I'd like to get a template that includes one or two keyboards, and 4 guitars to be bounced into stereo, and then the crazy lead stuff, but probably not vocals very often. Hopefully when it's a real song, that will fill in the holes.

Now that I've got the very basics down, I'll record a whole song on the weekend, and post to the clinic; I'm still more interested in the sound/mixing/software curve than the song, but I'll muster up something:).

Actually, is there any kind of trick in Sonar to let me create patterns? I don't mean looping, I've read about that. I know there are drum beats programmed, but I like to create my own patterns? Can I do this in Sonar? FL has one fatal flaw: all measures must be the same, i.e., can't throw a 3/4 pattern into a 4/4 song, technically (can pretend to, but that sucks).

I need a beat to get going, and I work from patterns, so this is really important to me.

MIDI is notes and velocities and channels and multi-timbral stuff and controllers and start and stop and patch and in and out and through and bank and UGH!!!

Yeah, sounds great. BTW, Shawn, what's your soundcard again ? Programing MIDI drums is not that hard. We can help for basic explanation, so you can have a basic point to develop...
 
My current soundcard is an Audigy 2, not Platinum, but after going all over the place with what to buy next, considering I need guitar amp, soundcard, and monitors, I've decided to get not the Delta 66, but the Delta 44 with the Omni on Monday. Not buying a drum machine, gonna learn Sonar.

Getting 44/Omni instead of 66, because I've decided to suck it up and get the Mesa Boogie Preamp instead of the Pod XT, and that's gonna take me till June to save for, since the Revalver isn't doing me that bad for now it seems.

So Delta 44 on Monday - because the Mesa doesn't do digital anyways, so the Delta 66 would be overkill for me.

Uh, a Boogie's overkill, but what the heck. I'm only doing this out of pure love, so why not??? Eventide H3000 into the effects loop, and I'm set for life, maybe external gate and a really good reverb.

But ask me on Monday, and I'll probably have spent my whole cheque on pizza:(

Oh yeah...when you take say ONE track in Sonar for drums (yeah, I know it's channel 10 LOL), can I still separate it in the field, i.e., hats off centre etc? Also, I'm sure if I want to verb the drums, and verb-and-flange the hats and cymbals, they'll have to be on separate tracks? You guys got Sonar POWER? Where do I look for this stuff in that book?

You might want to grab Sonar 2 Power. Book for $20.

It goes through three things you have not mentioned:

Two soft synths (Cyclone and I forget the other) they are both somewhat like FL.

There is also something called the Session drummer which is a bit like FL.

All of these things use midi, are somewhat similar to FL and have a load of tutorials files on the Sonar disk.

Keep it up. Sounding good.

I'm getting very bummed out, took the week off, but all I have is about 16 bars of a tune I wrote a decade ago (and therefore KNOW) in FL. Gave up on Sonar for now for drums/bass, using FL as an input to Sonar, but nothing is coming simply.

No worries, it's very much one step at a time. Gonna buy a microrecorder so I don't loose anything else during these beginner stages.

p.s. the Boogie sounds great, but it still isn't all the shit out of the box into the computer, has a direct feel to it a little, but I think I can knock that out with eq'ing and some verb and chorus.

I think getting bummed out and posting this was good:) Cuz I started from scratch, got inspired, and made something new. Using Sonar first, grabbed a couple chords I like, a progression, and suddenly I have the beginnings of a megametal symphony orchestra piece that I'm gonna make 15 minutes long LOL.

Hey, you gotta start somewhere, so why not? I'm learning that I can't make Sonar fit into me, so I have to fit into Sonar. So, I set a tempo, add an instrument and a drum on channel 10, and I just improvise in the Piano Roll view. Very backwards, but it's working...one thing I have to remember, is that if I'm writing from keyboard, I'll not work with chords. Gotta get that in my head, cuz progressions using chords sure beat runs that are only 2 or 3 notes wide, if that makes sense...just my way. May work for you:)

Sonar = Piano Roll and the Track view. That's the only way I can get it to work.

I would second that. I thought the bass and drums sound had some room for improvement, but I liked the guitar. Maybe not what you were going for, but still a decent sound I would say. (nice playing, too) :)
