Well, this IS interesting . .

On the other hand I have use MD to record on more than one
occasion with pretty good results too!

So, what have you guys done with your MD recorder? . .
Clean answers only please . .

I have a Sony MZR700 which I use to record band rehearsals (for reference...)

IMO, it's a convenient way to handle portable recording, with reasonable sound quality... but anything more serious than that, I find, is crippled by the inherent limitations of the format (ie, ATRAC).

YMMV

Bruce

Quite right Bruce

Yup . . Works well though eh! . .

Did a bootleg once of a band (that I know) on my Sharp 702
and the guys were stunned when i produced a CD for them!
It wasn't that good actually . .

Have used my Sony MDS-JB930 on occasion for recording and
have been pretty pleased with the results although, as you
say, i tend to feel that it has limitations and is somehow
compromising the sond quality . .

wELL, IT'S LATE AND i HAVE TO BE UP EARLY . .

aND.. My caps-lock was on!

Talk again . . Bye for now . .

I use my Yamaha MD8 w/ two AT MB4000C condenser mics to record concerts, practices and demos. I've done one full 8 track "studio" type recording that turned out ok for a first try.

Ive read that the new generation of recorders have still got compression but the quality isnt compromised a bit.

I have also used the optical input on my MD to use as a 24 bit d/a converter for my hard disc that has optical outs but 18bit word length on the analog outs.

Look - let's not kid ourselves here... there are viable uses for MiniDisc. But the recording format has a crippling effect on audio quality - whether it is significantly audible or not.

Yes - the ATRAC algorithms have been refined and do quite a reasonable job... BUT it still always throws away a portion of the original signal. That fact is inescapable - and means it will ALWAYS be inferior to a recording format that DOESN'T throw away some of the signal.

Use it for what it's worth, but let's not exaggerate it's capabilities. It is NOT a pro-grade medium (or even comparable to) for multi-track recording, mixdown, or mastering - and never will be.

Minidisc might not be the incredible medium for recording that we like to believe, but it gives me, the little amateur guy, a wonderful means of recording music for myself, that is flexible, easy to use and impressive to those who don't know otherwise. :D

(Blue Bear Sound - what do you think of Steve's Music on Rideau?)

Hi ya Stodge....

You in Ottawa too? I do an awful lot of shopping at Steve's!

But they've finally got some competition - Long & McQuade just opened up now too (at Bank and Alta Vista) - although their prices haven't been set to Steve's competitive levels - at least, not yet.

Nice to also have a place that stocks a lot of the Yorkville lines - some of which are pretty excellent - especially for PA work. (Yeah - Wall Sound carries Yorkville, but always had to be ordered...)

Bruce

Yes I'm in Ottawa, but I'm moving to Calgary in August. I won't be able to get down to Bank & Altavista (no car) before I leave. I've bought a few things from Steve's - I love going there just to look and dream! :)
